Tutoring review by Jennifer in Darien, IL
We covered sections 9.1, 9.4, and 9.5 of the algebra book. The student needed some reminding on inverse/ direct relations, but quickly picked it up. He did not have trouble simplifying polynomial fractions and was easily able to factor more complicated expressions. He also was able to perform complex fraction simplification with little tutoring, which was pretty awesome. In chemistry, we covered solutions, dilutions, molarity, molality, and colligative properties. I used familiar examples such as salt water, gas dissolved in soda, and salting icy roads to explain these concepts, which he seemed to understand readily and was able to perform some small calculations without issue. I stressed the importance of dimensional analysis rather than memorization and recommended he perform dilution problems from the book for extra practice.

Tutoring review by Terry in Darien, IL
The student said she had been writing division story problems in school. She said, "I would like to understand remainders." We worked a couple of examples of this with diagrams. She was able to state the quotient and remainder for these, with a little guidance. This seemed to remind her of a strategy she had learned in school, which was to show division as repeated subtraction. We discussed and reviewed a few problems. She then opened the cube net activity and talked herself through some of it. I allowed her time to complete the activity, and then moved her into the Measurement and Data standard 8.1 problems set on perimeters. She understood the concept of perimeter, yet made minor mistakes of multiplying rather than adding needed remainders. She showed good intuition about how to identify side lengths that are not labeled and she did an excellent job with mental calculation. I had brief conference with mom after the session. I told her that so far, the student's Math and Reading skills both seem pretty sharp in the areas we have investigated.
