College Essays Tutoring review by Kathryn in Bellevue, NE
Today was my first lesson with this student and it was good to see what level her English and education were on. We started with the alphabet. She was able to sing the alphabet song by herself, which was great to see. We will work on her pronunciation of some of the letters as at some points in the song she blended them together. Then I started with a few of the letters at the beginning of the alphabet. I chose to do a small number of letters. I wrote the letters A-G in capital and lowercase and went over identifying them with the student. She repeated me when I said the letter. I then pointed to different letters out of order to help her identify them. We spent time making the letters out of playdough so she could practice the shapes. She was very sweet and attentive in the lesson.

The student is still focusing on how to be concise and eloquent in his writing. The student was taught short vowel sounds and the silent "e" rule. To begin, I assessed his letter/sound recognition skills. In order to practice the difference, he used a mirror to repeat the sounds and paid attention to the physical difference from pronunciation. Additional materials included Level 2, support activities and a notebook for him to practice writing answers. His dad and I reviewed a few strategies for him to continue building his reading skills. We agreed for my continued service on Monday. He is an excellent student and I look forward to seeing him improve.

I have asked him to 1) write down daily assignments/homework; 2) write down deadlines -- tests, quizzes, projects; 3) check his class websites daily, approx. 5 minutes each day when he arrives home; 4) get a new binder -- his is now falling apart; 5) plan studying time and write it down in his planner; and 6) have a list of his grades printed out from the parent portal before we meet so that we can go over it and see where he needs to spend more time. He was a pleasure to work with -- responsive, thoughtful, willing to learn and listen. He picks up on new ideas quickly and responds when I ask him to delve further into material he's already learned.

The student and I worked in more depth with identifying parts of speech such as a noun, adjective, adverb, and verb. After reviewing the parts of speech, we spent a lot of time working on her book report for the book " Fallen Angels" we discussed the correct way to summarize a book and while also including your personal thoughts or questions throughout the report. Next week we will continue to work on her book report so that it can be the best written work she has ever turned in.
