About Me

Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, I recently finished my Masters of English degree at the University of Iowa, focusing on 20th-century American Novels and Cultural Studies. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and English, with a minor in History from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, graduating in 2010. In the past four years, I've really developed a passion for teaching and tutoring. I've taught English and rhetoric courses at the University of Iowa and Shandong Institute of Business and Technology in Yantai, China, as well as tutoring in the Business Writing and English Writing Centers at Iowa. In particular, I love tutoring writing in its many forms, from long essays to cover letters, as well as all subjects in the Humanities. I also enjoy tutoring standardized tests like the SAT and GRE because I can teach my students tips and tricks that can give them some peace of mind in high-pressure situations. My primary teaching philosophy is to look at each student as an individual. Rather than seeing students as a collective whole that can best be served by implementing uniform methods of teaching, I think of tutoring as something that needs to be modified to fit each student's individual learning style and way of interacting. If I'm not tutoring, I enjoy singing, exploring Seattle's vibrant neighborhoods and food scene, and writing fiction.
