How can Algebra tutoring help you succeed?

Algebra may be difficult at times, but understanding it opens the doors to understanding many advanced forms of mathematics that determine the physics of our world. We use algebra to determine the best deals when shopping, when determining probability, and when converting proportions when dealing with ingredients for cooking. Unfortunately, many students simply struggle with the subject, and may require help outside of the classroom. These students may feel like their teacher moves through concepts and terms far too quickly, or they may feel shy about asking questions in front of their classmates. Having their own tutor may tremendously help a student learn, and it may do so much for helping them develop their academic confidence. Contact the Varsity Tutors educational directors in Memphis to try to help your child get ahead of the curve in algebra. Allow your child to realize their full potential, and help them achieve the algebra grade that they need.

Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Algebra Tutoring review by Jonathan in Memphis, TN
The student and I completed our review of Chapters 4, 5, and 6 for his final exam tomorrow. After we finished reviewing Chapter 4, he said that he felt comfortable with most of the material in Chapter 5, and that most of his concerns were about Chapter 6. For this reason, we spent the majority of our time together working through this problematic chapter. I began with a overview by outlining important terms and concepts from each section and encouraged him to take notes for reference after our meeting. Some major topics I covered included some vocabulary about systems of equations, the steps behind methods of solving systems, and the ideal situations to use each method. As mentioned in a previous session's notes, the student had forgotten to use the substitution method, so I spent quite a bit of time making sure he understood the different scenarios. After we completed these review problems, I gave him a mixed set and tasked him with identifying the most efficient methods. With all these out of the way, I assigned him a series of word problems for him to work through to complete our review of chapter 6. Afterwards, I spent the remainder of the time working through some of the more difficult sections in previous chapters. These included the use of absolute values in inequalities and writing equations of parallel and perpendicular lines. I brought the session to a close with a run through of each chapter, in order to refresh his brain about all the work he had done so far.

Algebra Tutoring review by Dallas in Memphis, TN
We covered many topics today as a quick review for algebra. We went over exponents, slopes on a graph, order of operations, distributive properties, multi-step equations, and basic factoring. The student knew the material, but he did not know what was being specifically covered in class. I left him with some study skills that should be able to help him with math. I told him that a four colored pen helps with taking notes in math, how to set up an organized binder for math, to leave spaces in between his notes, when using the Cornell note taking method, and to take breaks when studying.

Algebra Tutoring review by Kasra in Memphis, TN
During this session with the student, we reviewed polynomials and the FOIL method of distribution. It's clear that he has a good handle on the material. After practicing the FOIL method a few times, he definitely picked it up very fast and was improving his accuracy with every problem. He is a very smart student, and even though he is not equally interested in every subject in math, he is still very motivated to learn and that's a very valuable asset to have. During our session, I gave him various strategies to make using the FOIL method easier, such as using arrows to show how the distribution works out. For extra practice, I told him to complete problems from the mid-chapter quiz. He has not had a quiz or test since returning to school after the holidays, so I haven't seen any scores or grades. However, he informed me that he may have a test next week, and if that's the case, I will definitely help him prepare for it. Overall, I am happy to see him progressing as he always is.

Algebra Tutoring review by Ivana in Memphis, TN
Today we discussed polynomial factoring, and the differences between polynomial factoring with a leading coefficient of 1 and without a leading coefficient of 1. She had the hardest time remembering the steps that were involved in factoring a polynomial but, after completing several problems, she understood the methods to solve these types of problems. Her attitude was enthusiastic and she did very well in picking up the material quickly. I left her with 30 practice questions to complete before her quiz. Overall, the session was successful and the student understood the material.

Algebra Tutoring review by Lori in Memphis, TN
On Wednesday we went over another homework set about inequalities with two variables and graphing those functions. This set was definitely more challenging than the previous one and focused more on how to interpret these functions in terms of real world problems. Some of the problems were challenging and required critical thinking and applying past lessons. Towards the end of the set, she was able to answer my questions that weren't directly from the problem but acted more of as a test to see if she understood it. I have noticed that she has significantly improved on her actual solving abilities and is able to move parts of the equation around mentally rather than writing down every single step, and she is able to do it correctly without making any errors like in the past.

Algebra Tutoring review by Matthew in Memphis, TN
I reviewed the student's skills by going through some flashcards. We covered some questions pertaining to what his homework questions were asking. He knows his concepts and is a very intelligent student. He occasionally misses a few technical details when solving a problem. He picks up on things quickly, so I'm looking forward to refining his skills so he doesn't miss any small details on assignments and tests. He'll do very well in this class.
