Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Hyerin in Marion, TN
During our session, I helped the student work on a review of some problems covering t-tests, differences in means, and hypothesis testing that were assigned to him as homework. He struggled with understanding the process of testing hypotheses (particularly when dealing with two samples), so I recommended that he work on practice problems and read the text more closely. I will send him supplemental materials in order to help him.

During the session, the student completed a homework assignment comparing two proportions. The exercise required her to determine whether each sample met the appropriate assumptions, create a 95% confidence interval for the difference in proportions using a graphing calculator, calculate the standard error in two proportions, interpret the results, and explain her findings. She was initially asked to solve each practice problem independently. If she provided an inaccurate or incomplete response, I pointed out her error, and asked her questions aimed at guiding her toward the correct answer.

We also discussed contingency tables and how to determine of their is an association between two categorical variables. The student applied all discussed concepts to his homework problems.

Happy to help out the student again today! She needed to improve on her homework in her stats class in order to better her overall class grade. Today I worked with her through some questions she missed, and we corrected them as needed. The biggest issue I saw is that she sometimes has an issue with the order of operations. When there are big formulas with multiple parts, she needs to take her time to write out the equation and make sure she is calculating all the parts in the correct order.

Statistics Tutoring review by Jessica in Marion, TN
I am so proud of the student and all the progress she has made since we started working together. First off, she reported that on her last quiz she got an 85%, which is the highest grade she has gotten so far. I think that really helped to boost her confidence because when we were working together today, she was blazing through problems that were taking her much longer a few weeks ago. Today's work was on conditional probability, and she seemed to really be "getting it" and did not need an exceptional amount of explaining from me, just confirmation that what she was doing was correct. She has a quiz tomorrow, and I am confident that she is going to do well.

Statistics Tutoring review by David in Marion, TN
I continued to work through the math lab with the student. We covered more word problems involving simple interest in real-life situations. If she is careful with what gets put into the equations, she usually gets the correct answer. We broke down the equations to focus on what each term means. We also covered looking up ARRs by formula and using tables. Monthly mortgage rates were additionally covered in word problems. Some of the problems required two equations to solve, and the student did well.
