Rolling Meadows ACCUPLACER Arithmetic Tutoring FAQ
Many universities and colleges rely on the ACCUPLACER exam to analyze the degree to which incoming students have mastered core mathematical and verbal concepts. The ACCUPLACER is a suite of tests that quickly, accurately, and efficiently assess reading, writing, math, and computer skills, according to the official website. An individual's academic strengths and weaknesses are highlighted in these tests, and an interactive learning tool is provided so that colleges and higher-learning institutions may identify your specific needs in a particular subject.
Institutions use the results of this series of tests to assist in the placement of each student into first-semester courses of appropriate difficulty and content. These are courses that will challenge students, but not bore, stress, or overwhelm them. If you are getting ready to take the ACCUPLACER, the Arithmetic section may be the part of the test for which review seems most unnecessary. Consisting of 17 questions about the basic operations and applications of arithmetic, including whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages, the Arithmetic section can be easy to brush off. These basic skills may be your most rusty; however, they were likely covered a long time ago.
Not reviewing these core concepts can result in a non-optimal performance on this section of the ACCUPLACER, and this can have disastrous results for your placement in first-semester math courses. Ending up in a class that teaches material you already know can add an unnecessary workload to your degree track. This may perhaps even prevent you from registering for more advanced courses until you complete easier prerequisites that you might have been able to skip had you performed better on the ACCUPLACER. Reviewing your elementary math skills in preparation for the ACCUPLACER Arithmetic section can have long-lasting benefits on your undergraduate education, but determining the particular content on which to focus your review can be a rather unintuitive task. Custom-tailored ACCUPLACER Arithmetic tutoring might be just the thing to help you study efficiently and effectively. Varsity Tutors' educational directors can help you select an instructor who knows all of the ins and outs of this specific section of the ACCUPLACER and the content it tests.
Each instructor has the teaching skills to make concepts seem intuitive, no matter which teaching style you find to be most effective. This is where Varsity Tutors steps in. Its educational directors can analyze your particular strengths and weaknesses in working with arithmetic and can use this analysis to assign a private tutor that is perfect for your needs. From there, your tutor will design a customized series of lesson plans focused on helping you master just those topics you most need to work on before test day.
Each tutoring session can take place in a one-on-one, in-person setting, so you can have your instructor's full attention. Face-to-face online tutoring is also available upon request. This is to accommodate your work or school schedule, and everything in between. Additionally, the individual nature of private tutoring means that you can work at whatever pace allows you to learn best. In order to grasp the material completely, you are encouraged to spend just as much time on a concept as it takes you to fully understand it. Do not feel rushed. Anything that is hard to comprehend can be reviewed. To save on time, however, all materials and concepts that were previously learned will not be reviewed as you have already mastered this subject. If you would like to learn more about ACCUPLACER Arithmetic tutoring available near you, or to schedule your first session, contact Varsity Tutors today! Tutors are professional, experienced, knowledgeable, and would love to work with you.

Recent Rolling Meadows ACCUPLACER Arithmetic Tutoring Session Notes
Tonight we continued reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and basic word problems. We spent quite a bit of time focusing on fractions - converting mixed fractions to improper fractions, finding the common denominator, and adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. The student is improving!
Today we discussed how to prepare a writing assignment for the student. We went over choosing the right topic based on the criteria provided in the test, ways to brainstorm, how to write an introduction, adding details to your writing and more. He completed the writing assignment component of his High School practice entrance exam.
Today the student and I did more worksheets from her reading comprehension workbook. She has done most of the practices in the book, so the activities and passages are getting more difficult. Next week we will look exclusively at poems.
During this session, the student and I worked on improving her grammar as well as reading & comprehension. First, I had her complete the second half of the grammar section from the High School exam practice test. Based on either her errors or the grammar rules tested on this section, I had her learn these rules with me using example sentences. Specifically, we focused on the use of me vs. I, as well as recognizing fragments/run-ons from complete sentences. Second, I had her do a practice reading & comprehension passage followed by questions. I selected a very challenging passage for her so that she could practice the strategies I have had her use; Always remembering the main idea, and returning to the passage to find evidence in the text rather than make guesses that are unfounded "stretches."
The student and I went back to the math section of the practice test. After working through each problem, I asked her to tell me what the main concept of the problem was, and to summarize how she found the solution. I am helping her identify "clues" in a problem's wording as to whether the problem is more logic or pattern-based, or more arithmetic-based, to help speed up the process of understanding what the problem is really asking and solving it accurately. I assigned her a set of math problems and two reading comprehension exercises to complete over the next few days when we will not be meeting.
I am tutoring the student for the exam. Today we discussed the topics that would be on the exam and narrowed down the areas of focus. We worked through mathematical word problems and an English diagnostic. Next week, we are going to practice more word problems and begin working on root words.
