We went over some of the student's homework that was focusing mainly on orders of operation. For instance, one problem would have multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction involved, as well as parentheses. I made sure that he was aware of the acronym for determining which part of each equation to do first: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction). The more we did the better he got the hang of it. I started using a different technique to help with his attention. Since he loves science, especially space related facts, he does one problem and then he gets to ask me a science question, or look at a couple of random science facts.

We covered review from algebra II (inequalities, systems of equations, graphing, intersecting lines, domain, range). The student seemed to remember most of the material and was good at implementing PEMDAS and how to solve the problems. He struggled a little bit with keeping track of his arithmetic, but otherwise was pretty solid. We went on to preview the second chapter of his textbook, which introduced continuity and increasing/ decreasing/ constant functions/ intervals of functions. He had trouble grasping the new concepts, but was able to get it in the end.

During today's session, I showed the student how the active reading skills we discussed in the last session applied to the science section as well as the reading test. We looked at a variety of science passages, including data analysis, research summary, and conflicting viewpoints, and related questions. I directed his attention to the importance of grasping general trends in data, identifying constants and independent and dependent variables, and noticing the relationship between concepts. I encouraged him to tie abstract concepts from the passages to more common-sense experiences, like noting that the relationship between volume and pressure would be inversely proportional, and relating this to the experience of increasing the pressure on a balloon by squeezing it to decrease its volume. We then spent the last hour of the session beginning a review of grammatical concepts commonly seen on the English test, such as subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, conjunction errors, clause coordination, verb case, participial phrase errors, and punctuation errors. We also looked at a few selected English practice questions that illustrated some of these concepts. I also described the general format of the English test and encouraged the student to complete a practice English section in his own time to get a better feel for the pace of the section as well as see if any types of questions stood out to him as particularly difficult.

During today's session, we primarily reviewed homework. The main subject today was math. The student worked on problems in his math book and I assisted him if he needed help. He seemed to do well on today's assignment and needed only minimal help. After working on math, he worked on some slides for a PowerPoint presentation, and we finished up the session by reviewing Spanish terms. Today's session went well, and he is doing great in each session. His confidence seems to be growing, and I'm expecting to see results on his upcoming tests/quizzes.
