Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Michelle in Lowell, MA
In this first session to prepare the student for the assessment test, we went over questions from the online exam. He was already strong in both verbal and nonverbal skills. He particularly enjoyed finding patterns. He improved on analogies throughout our time together when I started to ask him to tell me what the relationship was between the pictures in the first pair so that he could apply it to the second. He was able to answer several math questions that I would not have expected a child of his age to have been able to solve.

SSAT Tutoring review by Jordan in Lowell, MA
During the week, the student worked through two sections of a practice test and then checked her answers. We reviewed some of the problems she got wrong, and I did recommend some very specific strategies for annotating the reading passage that she should implement in practice this week. We went through a set of 18 problems online. Her intuition for sentence meanings is fairly strong. At this point, she should put some effort into expanding her vocabulary. At the end of the session we reviewed some vocabulary cards. I also recommend that she attempt to take a full practice test, including the essay portion.

SSAT Tutoring review by Hillary in Lowell, MA
We went through math and critical reading diagnostic tests that the student had completed, looking at the questions she had gotten wrong. She seemed to understand the critical reading passages well and the wrong answers were mostly based on vocabulary. In the math section she had done very well. We also discussed potentially helpful formulas. Finally, we looked at her writing and discussed the essays. The first one I went paragraph by paragraph for improvements. For the second essay I had her point out the improvements herself. For next time, I sent another essay prompt, a critical reading diagnostic, a math diagnostic, and a writing diagnostic.

SSAT Tutoring review by Kelsey in Lowell, MA
The student and I worked through a math section and a critical reading section today. She had begun work on math on her own and was stuck very quickly, so we worked side by side to try to approach problems. Her main problem now is identifying the key initial steps to solving a problem, but once she got help on how to attack it a bit, she did better. She is working better with percentages now that we are approaching them as over 100 for setting up equations. We also discussed why sentences can begin with "because" and how to distinguish between a dependent clause as part of a sentence versus a fragment.

SSAT Tutoring review by Sean in Lowell, MA
We focused more on the reading and writing sections, reviewing through grammatical concepts as well as finding direct contextual support. The student did well on improving sentences; he just needs to drill through as much as he can this week in order to recognize the common structuring of errors (e.g. singular vs plural pronouns, subtle preposition errors). With reading, he should continue to review through the vocabulary list. He was much better today at finding direct support in the context for his answers, and got nearly all the long-passage questions correct. Throughout this week, I urged him to drill through as many questions as he can. We will go over the essay on Thursday, and I recommended that he write an essay for Thursday so that we can review the finer points of it.
