Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Kory in Lowell, MA
Worked on the student's conics test. She seems to understand the basic material (basic formulas, etc.). However, she should practice on recognizing these standard formulas in non-standard settings. For instance, the equation of a hyperbola is not always going to be in the basic form that she is used to. With some practice, she was able to recognize many of the formulas, but should review more in preparation for the final. Keep up the great work!

Today's review was before the student's Chemistry 6B Final exam for tomorrow. Mainly we focused on electron orbital hybridization such as sp, sp2, sp3, etc. and how this is related to bond formation in molecules. We talked about sigma(single) and pi(double) bonds w/ orbitals and determining shape/orientation of molecules based on hybridization (linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, etc.). We went through several examples in her textbook determining type of orbitals based on Lewis structures and what and how many bonds were present in: (CH3)2CO (acetone), HCN and CO2.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Neil in Lowell, MA
Today we worked through the student's fifth module out of eight. This module brings in a lot more of the technical tools required to actually do statistical analysis. We learned about z statistics, t statistics, one and two-tailed hypothesis testing, and chi-squared testing. We discussed the possible pitfalls of comparing group differences with statistics, as well as hypothetical situations were hypothesis testing enters into everyday life. We also discussed the importance of distinguishing between failing to reject the null hypothesis and accepting the null hypothesis, and which is more correct to apply. We also continued our discussion from our last meeting about different types of data and how those types of data affect the kinds of statistical operations we can perform over a sample. We ended by talking about the F statistic for comparing standard deviations between populations.

Physical Chemistry Tutoring review by Eric in Lowell, MA
The student and I finished reviewing chapters 2 and 3 for his upcoming algebra test. I designed several pages worth of problems to address the issues he was having the most difficulty with and selected a bunch of questions from his chapter tests to work through. He definitely made progress and should feel good going into this test. If he takes his time on the test, he'll be fine. We went through his chemistry homework. We also reviewed his study guide for the test and he felt very comfortable with all of the subject matter, so we didn't spend a ton of time on it. He seems to know his chemistry pretty well.
