How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The Secondary School Admissions Test or SSAT is an exam used to measure students' skills in many different areas. The results are combined with other materials, such as previous school transcripts, to determine admission decisions for many elite private middle and high schools. The SSAT is given to students in grades 3-11. It is offered once a month from October to April and once in June. It is given at three different levels: elementary, middle, and upper. The exam measures students' capabilities in math, reading, verbal reasoning, and writing. The elementary level is given over one hour and fifty minutes to third- and fourth-grade students. The middle level is given over three hours and five minutes to students in grades five through seven, and the upper level is given over three hours and five minutes to students in eighth grade and above. No matter which level of exam your student is preparing to take, skilled Boston SSAT tutors can help them study.

Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

SSAT Tutoring review by Michael in Boston, MA
Spent an hour quizzing the student on vocab flash cards. He knew many of the words, reasoned through the stems/prefixes of others, and used the context clues provided in sentences to infer the meaning of the rest. I reviewed key concepts in the math section, including percentages, fractions, decimals, RT=D, and other word problems. He is beginning to show work on the math problems, which is a big step in the right direction towards improved accuracy. As always, the student had a positive attitude, asked me great questions to clarify his understanding, and did well on the practice tests. He is a great student!

Today I had the student take the final section of the practice test (verbal). She has shown amazing improvement in this area. We reviewed the test and then spent the remainder of the session on math. We reviewed the rest of the practice test from last time and then did a few more pages of practice problems from her test prep book.

SSAT Tutoring review by Alyssa in Boston, MA
Today the student took a full-length practice exam and I proctored as close to the actual experience as possible. Overall, he seemed to handle the pressure well. His creative essay was very strong and I think admissions committees will be impressed by his writing skills. He did well in the Verbal section. I think the vocabulary lists have been really helpful for him, and he even said some of the words showed up on there.

SSAT Tutoring review by Paul in Boston, MA
Today we worked through some online games on fractions, percentages, decimals and analogies. She seemed to enjoy the games. She still needs work on converting between fractions and percentages but she is progressing well on analogies.

SSAT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Boston, MA
Today the student and I met for the first time. We talked about the general makeup of the test and how it is scored and some basic test strategies. We started with reading today and the student has a strong concept of how to answer the reading questions. For next time I asked that the student begin to practice the verbal section of the exam because that section is the one most students struggle with. We will start going over the verbal section on Thursday when we meet.

SSAT Tutoring review by Rebekah in Boston, MA
The student and I began by working on the math section. We covered ratios and proportions and probability. She has not done a lot with these types of questions before so we will discuss it again next time I see her. She made huge progress in setting up the problems and solving word problems today. We also worked on some vocabulary building exercises and learned a new word set. By the end of our time, she was confidently using some of the words we had gone over in conversation and we were working on making connections to other words to help with the synonym section.
