If you feel as though you could benefit from taking a San Antonio ACT prep course, Varsity Tutors can find you a comprehensive course to help you break down all of the concepts you might see on exam day. The ACT is an extremely well-known standardized exam accepted by undergraduate programs across the country as part of a prospective student's application for admission. Whether you attend Alamo Heights High School, Reagan High School, or another local high school, it is recommended that you take the ACT for the first time as a junior so that you can try again if necessary.
The ACT covers a variety of topics studied over the course of your high school career, and preparing for it can seem impossible on your own. Fortunately, we can place you in a San Antonio ACT class to help you build the study skills you'll need on exam day. Read on to learn more about how we can help you pursue academic success.
What subjects are covered in a San Antonio ACT course?
The ACT is a traditional high-stakes exam with four mandatory sections: Math, Reading, English, and Science. Each of these utilize a multiple-choice format and are scored on a scale from 1-36. There is also an optional Writing section scored from 2-12 that you may need to take for the schools you're applying to. In total, the ACT lasts two hours and 55 minutes without breaks while the ACT Plus Writing is three hours, 35 minutes. Let's take a look at the material covered on each portion of the test:
1. Math
The ACT's Mathematics section consists of 60 questions over a testing session lasting one hour. Items are drawn from all of the topics you have studied in high school, including how to simplify equations, determine the circumference of a circle, rudimentary probability, and the trigonometry of right triangles using a graphing calculator. The use of an approved calculator is permitted on all questions and required on some. The Mathematics section primarily tests your quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills.
2. Reading
The assessment's Reading section contains 40 questions over a 35-minute testing session. All of the items are based on corresponding reading passages, and you'll need to correctly identify the main idea, differentiate between facts and opinions, understand logical relationships, and summarize what you have read on this section. You are also expected to compare and contrast different texts to prove that you have a comprehensive understanding of each. Your reading comprehension and logical thinking skills are evaluated on this section.
3. English
The ACT's English section is also passage-based, and you have 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. This section stresses the mechanics of the English language, including grammar, punctuation, style, tone, and organization. You are also expected to look at how an author develops a topic, rather than merely understanding what they said. The ACT's English section measures your attention to detail and communication skills.
4. Science
The ACT's Science section consists of 40 items over a testing session lasting 35 minutes. Questions come from all of the scientific topics you are likely to have studied thus far: chemistry, physics, space science, and biology. You are also expected to have a strong command of the Scientific Method and how to interpret data resulting from an experiment. The ACT's Science section measures your interpretation, problem-solving, and analytical abilities.
5. Writing
Finally, the ACT's Writing assessment gives you 40 minutes to plan and compose an essay on an "issue" provided. You will be given three perspectives on the issue, a minimum of one of which must be incorporated into your work. Note that you are free to have a fourth perspective entirely separate from those provided to you, and that disagreeing with a provided perspective and explaining why counts as using it in your essay. This section measures your organizational and written communication skills.
Why should I take a San Antonio ACT course?
Studying in a San Antonio ACT course allows you to learn in a collaborative learning environment. Varsity Tutors vets every instructor we work with, so you can count on a teacher with fantastic communication skills and a solid understanding of the fundamentals of ACT prep. Our live virtual platform also facilitates real-time interactions that feel just like meeting in person, giving you the benefits of attending a physical classroom without the hassle of getting there.
Working with other students also carries several advantages. You are free to interact with your classmates as well as your teacher, allowing you to help them through any learning obstacles they are experiencing to reinforce your own understanding. Likewise, if another student picks up a great test-taking tip outside the virtual classroom, they can share it with you and all of the other students in your San Antonio ACT class. Your classmates can also absorb some of the financial cost of your test prep, giving all of you a superior study experience for a fraction of what it would cost to purchase on your own.
It can also be beneficial to collaborate with multiple people. For example, you might all outline a mock essay and then share what you did to give each other ideas for next time. Alternatively, you can share strategies for eliminating incorrect answer choices if you're feeling stumped. Best of all, you also have the option of setting aside private study time with your instructor to get some individualized attention if you need it.
Varsity Tutors also strives to make attending your course as convenient as possible. We offer both two and four-week course sessions, allowing you to pick the one that works best for you. We also start new courses every week, so it's always a great time to start pursuing your educational goals.

...taught math at a University level and he would make the subject fun and engaging. Because of that, I grew up loving math. No matter how difficult it was to grasp a concept at first, my dad would approach it in different ways until something clicked and and I felt like I had mastered it. I was really impressed by the difference his patience made and I love tutoring because it helps me do that...

I like to be creative and adapt to the learning style of a student. My goal is to make learning fun and never feel like a chore.... Adapt to what kind of learning the student best responds to; that way learning is fun and easy going, and never frustrating.... Get to know each other a bit, in order to know how to approach each topic the best way possible.... I think making different suggestions on how I taught myself, the material could bring some insight to someone in how to go about understanding the topic.

I believe that with my help anyone should be able to meet and hopefully even achieve their expectations. Because no two students are the same, I believe that it is important to evaluate what an individual's most effective learning style is. Ideally, this means that each student would come to me and tell me exactly...
