Most High school students in Houston, including students from Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School and Carnegie Vanguard High School, look forward to joining college and are aware of the importance of the ACT. That is why they strive to score highly in their exams. If you are a student who's looking for extra help in your preparations, Varsity Tutors can set you up with a Texas ACT course that fits your schedule.
What does the Houston ACT course help me review?
The ACT has five different sections which are Math, English, Science, Reading, and Writing. This last section is optional and does not need to be completed unless the test-taker wants to include it with their application. The ACT exam is meant to evaluate your skills and abilities in these subjects and will take 3 hours and 35 minutes to complete. This is assuming that you choose to include the Writing section. Without that, the exam will take 2 hours and 55 minutes, not including time allotted for rest periods.
You may be wondering what you can expect within each section. Well, the Math portion has 60 questions, and it is allocated 60 minutes of the overall test-time. Therefore, you only have a minute on average to tackle each problem. Proper study practices and preparation can help you reduce the amount of time it takes to work through each problem, increasing the likelihood that you will be able to provide an answer for each question asked. But what exactly will you be asked? The math skills that will be evaluated in this segment will include problems from pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, and trigonometry.
The English section has 75 questions that must be answered within 45 minutes. These are multiple-choice questions that evaluate your knowledge of language skills. The questions are meant to determine your skills in sentence construction, punctuation, grammar. Most of the problems in this section will require you to revise and edit text, so you'll need to be very attentive to details. You'll also need to have strong topic development skills to successfully tackle this portion of the exam.
The Science section has 40 questions that must be answered in 35 minutes. During this subject, you will need to apply scientific concepts commonly used to perform scientific investigations and experiments. It also tests your abilities to manipulate, analyze, and disseminate scientific data presented in different formats. The topics in this section you will need to prepare for include biology, physics, Earth and space sciences, and chemistry.
The Reading section has 40 questions that must be answered in 35 minutes. This section tests your reading comprehension skills. Are you able to understand different themes in a passage and the relationships between the themes? Can you differentiate facts and opinions in a passage? You should be able to summarize ideas and understand phrase meanings to pass this section successfully.
The final and optional section will be Writing. If you choose to complete this portion of the exam, you will receive a writing prompt which includes three separate perspectives for one topic. You will need to analyze the information presents and construct a response showing your own unique perspective. This answer will need to be well-organized and clearly written in the time allowed.

...and critical reading sections of standardized tests. With my techniques, anyone can confidently get the score they need on the SAT or GRE. In addition to test preparation, I am available to tutor APUSH, AP European History, public speaking, literature, and writing. With over two years of experience as an educator at a Tier-1 University, I can guarantee that you or your child will receive the care and commitment of a qualified teacher.... The primary goal of teaching is to inspire confidence in the student and to equip them with the necessary skills to achieve their desired goals. I believe in assessing a student’s proficiency in the subject at hand and designing a learning curriculum to match their individual needs. I find that students have different learning styles and aptitudes: some require step-by-step instruction, while others prefer to try and solve a problem on their own. Regardless of what the student prefers, I am ready to provide that for them. In addition, I believe that familiarity with the subject and nature of the test inspires confidence and decreases anxiety. Therefore, I believe in recreating the testing environment at home so that the student will be comfortable when it comes to test day. Finally, I believe in displaying enthusiasm for the subject so that the student sees that learning is something to get excited about, and can be a rewarding experience in its own right.
