Physiology Tutoring review by Alexandra in Lawrence, MA
The student and I continued to prepare her for her anatomy and physiology test. It was evident she had put a great deal of time into studying and was much more comfortable with the topics in both lymphatics and the cardiovascular system. Using her PowerPoint handouts, I asked her questions from the material. Many of these she answered quite comfortably, and when I managed to stump her on one, we went through the relevant material, explained the importance of the concept and went through the components of a correct answer. We focused our efforts on the cardiovascular system, and I was sure to cover the specific arterial and venous courses through various regions of the human anatomy. Once again, she was comfortable with the material, requiring clarification on only a couple courses. I finished by encouraging her to continue to study and know both the physiology of blood vessels and anatomical courses in as much detail as she could. Additionally, I sent along my own notes on the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems so she could use them as reference material.

Physiology Tutoring review by Christopher in Lawrence, MA
During our session, we went into a detailed lesson about redox reactions. We went over how to identify reduction and oxidation in a half reaction as well as full reactions. We did some more work with assigning oxidation numbers and how to use that in redox questions to identify reduced/oxidized species. Finally, we started to go over balancing redox reactions. The student will need additional practice on certain concepts on redox and keeping things straight (like reduction = gain of electrons = charge on species gets less positive). Balancing reactions is definitely a work in progress and will continue during our next session.

Physiology Tutoring review by Joseph in Lawrence, MA
The student and I met Tuesday evening and went over a series of review questions for his upcoming exam. He mentioned that he received a 96 on a previous quiz. The test review concentrated on sound, waves, frequencies, wavelengths, velocity, and distances waves travel. Some questions were qualitative and a few even required using old physics lessons in solving the problem (e.g. velocities, Newton's laws, and conservation of energy combined with wave mechanics). He seemed pretty pumped up about the exam - I advised him to recheck his work if he has time and to always use the same methods to solve his problems (given, find, assumptions, etc.)

The student and I covered frequency, period, angular frequency, and some useful information about the equations for simple harmonic motion. We directed our session to problem solving so we focused on strategies to use the right combination of equations and information to arrive to an answer. We worked on interpreting a graph and connecting it back to the equations of simple harmonic motion.

Today the student and I started oxidation-reduction reactions. We spent the session working through an extra-credit packet that her teacher provided and balancing oxidation-reduction problems in both acidic and basic solutions. Although she has a strong understanding the general concept and methods well, there were some small issues with focusing on minor details within each problem, leading to mistakes. This can be easily corrected through additional practice of the material.

Physiology Tutoring review by Ryan in Lawrence, MA
During this session, we finished the lecture 12 and 13 material involving respiration. The student was picking up this information much more easily. We then moved on to working on a study guide for lectures 11, 12, and 13. He did well at remembering the information from these questions. I suggested that he prints out a diagram of the respiratory system and fill it out to study from.
