Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I try to cater each lesson to address that student's learning style. I like to cater to a person's strengths in an attempt to meet them halfway in the learning experience.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know my student and the way they learn so that we can better customize the approach that will work best moving forward.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching them the critical thinking skill they need not only to address the problems in front of them but also those they may encounter in the future.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encouragement and reinforcement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will try a different method, whether visual or explanatory in order to help them learn.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would encourage reading slowly, and have them think about each line and phrase it in their own words.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I would spend some time talking to them about what they think their strengths and weaknesses are.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find out how to make it relatable to their life and encourage them to engage with it.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will ask them to explain and "teach back" the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Repetition and examples in which they are directing the problem solving and taking the lead.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I generally know this by interacting with them and watching how they approach the material.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use visual materials often as well as real life examples whenever possible.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I will change the style based on my assessment of how they learn.
