Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Physiology Tutoring review by Andrew in Fairfield, CT
This session we reviewed photosynthesis, antenna complex, chloroplast structure, absorption versus action spectrum, light system I/P700/cyclic electron flow versus light system II/P680/noncyclic electron flow, Calvin cycle, and chemiosmosis in mitochondria versus chloroplasts. The student has excellent grasp of fundamental concepts. I recommended he review and compare ATP used versus ATP produced in respiration versus photosynthesis, write out pathways from memory to better retain information, and diagram localization of different steps of photosynthesis in anticipation of "where does this reaction occur" type of questions.

Physiology Tutoring review by Benjamin in Fairfield, CT
The student had completed a practice AP exam over the weekend. I went over his answers with him for the majority of the session. Most of his mistakes were due to minor mental math errors since he cannot use a calculator for the multiple choice questions. We discussed useful tricks he can use, such as rounding and estimating answers, so that he can get to an answer quickly without wasting too much time. He seemed to understand the majority of the questions he got wrong, and remains encouraged with his performance. I told him to try to do more practice problems before we meet on Thursday, since it is a more practical way to learn and test his understanding, rather than simply reviewing old topics again.

Physiology Tutoring review by Brianna in Fairfield, CT
The student and I went over percent solution, along with parts per thousand and parts per million. The student did very well on this subject and finished her work efficiently. We then continued our review for her final, going over writing chemical reactions, calculating protons, neutrons and electrons given the element name. It was a solid session.

Physiology Tutoring review by Dana in Fairfield, CT
We worked with a few problems on ideal gases and then covered the student's pre-lab. Her teacher is going to start throwing dimensional analysis at them (changing mL to L, grams to kilograms), so we will focus on this next.

Physiology Tutoring review by Kinjal in Fairfield, CT
The concepts we covered were mainly on translation and translation rules. The student was very positive about the material that was being reviewed. She said that she understood the material much better than she had in class. We did several practice problems, in which she actually had to translate a triangle based on a rule or figure out the rule based on a given translation on a graph. She got a better grasp of the topic when we did more practice problems. I gave her shortcuts to finding out the translated points like plugging in the original coordinate points into the rule, etc.

Physiology Tutoring review by Luke in Fairfield, CT
We worked through the learning objectives section of the student's test prep material. Most of the problems were review of dimensional analysis and ionic compounds. Some were basic algebra. She is very good at executing on problems once she remembers the system, but needs to work on recognizing what systematic approach to take without outside prompting.
