Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Auburn, WA Physics tutoring
For this session, we finished the student's harmonics homework and did a few problems that involved the Doppler effect. When we went over the Doppler effect, I explained how to figure out whether to add or subtract for the numerator and the denominator in the equation rather than have her try to memorize the equations for each situation. If she knows how to think about it logically, it won't matter if she has each scenario memorized. After reviewing harmonics for her quiz the next day, we reviewed geometry for her test the next day. We reviewed the law of sines and the law of cosines as well as how to find the sides of special triangles.

Today was the student's best session overall. The last session we worked on material for the future so I was looking to see how much he had retained, because a big portion of that last session was to be included in tomorrow's exam. He did remember a lot of information from our last session, particularly the material on electric fields, and potential. So today we finished the additional material on circuits resistance and current. The student was able to do a ton of practice problems, including the class review sheet which he nailed perfectly (10/10). I'm predicting he will do well tomorrow.

During this session we worked on reviewing for the student's physics final. We primarily worked on kinematics. We looked at two dimensional motion with constant acceleration and how to choose what equations to use. We also discussed vector addition and how to find a vectors component parts. We discussed rotational motion and torque. We also covered conservation of momentum and inelastic vs elastic collisions.

In this session, we covered use of the gravitational force equation. Most problems focused on calculating force given masses and radius, but we also covered solving for each variable depending on the specific problem. For each problem, we discussed strategies for identifying what the question is asking the student to find. We discussed how changes in mass or radius affect the gravitational force and also covered how this equation relates to a planet's gravitational acceleration. The student seemed hesitant with the material at the beginning of the session, but seemed much more comfortable and confident in the use of this equation by the end.

In this session, we reviewed material from earlier in the year in preparation for an upcoming exam. Emphasis was placed on identifying each type of problem and the main associated equations. Problems involving multiple topics at once, such as kinematics combined with Newton's Laws, were covered. New material involving work and energy was also covered. The main issue with solving these problems was understanding and identifying the angle between vectors involved in the work formula, but the student made excellent progress during the session in this area. She reported she is currently getting a borderline A in the class.
