Session Summaries by Physics Tutors

Arlington Heights, IL Physics tutoring
The student had a test a couple weeks ago on kinematics. The test was more difficult that he expected based on the practice test, and he was very happy with his final grade. Today, we started reviewing concepts for the next section of his course on forces. We briefly reviewed Newton's Laws and began going through practice problems. We reviewed the three example problems that his professor covered and then started working on homework problems. He did very well on the homework problems. He is able to correctly draw free body diagrams and label forces based on the questions. He is also able to divide the forces and accelerations into their x and y components to solved the problems using Newton's second law.

The student had more to work on with circular motion, which is particularly difficult in introductory physics. She had a web-assign on the force of gravity as well. We went through the assignment slowly because I had to teach the material as well as do problems on it. Last, we worked on presentation on the physics of waterslides. She had completed most of it herself, but we made sure she hit every single topic.

We started off the session going over force diagrams and basic force problems. We worked through a worksheet that the student had, and prepared for a quiz tomorrow on the material. After that he didn't have anymore new material to go over so we went back and did some practice on utilizing the kinematic equations, which he expressed he wasn't as comfortable with. By the end of the session he was doing the problems on his own, it will just take more practice so that he's confident doing them quickly in a testing environment.

In geometry we talked about vectors. The student did well with identifying parallel and equal vectors, and writing the vectors in component form. In biology we started talking about natural selection as a means to evolution.

We covered wave motion, graphing a simple sine wave and identifying pieces of the wave. We discussed how a sine wave's value will be the same for sin(x) and for sin(x+360), and be opposite for sin(x) and sin(x+180). She struggled the most with the concept of phase of the wave and identifying where two waves would be n-degrees our of phase. We also covered the superposition of waves, adding two or more waves together; if the value of both waves at a particular point are both positive or both negative, then the waves constructively interfere, if one is positive and the other is negative, then they destructively interfere. We also covered some optics, such as virtual image inside of a mirror.

I showed the student the solutions to the problems from last week: an eye under water, a refracting telescope, and the equations for contact lens power. Then we worked on some interference problems.
