Varsity Tutors can help you identify the right Kansas City SSAT prep strategy for your child. Whether you have a student who will be taking the Upper, Middle, or Elementary Level SSAT, we know how important it is to you to provide them with the resources they need to work towards their learning goals.
The SSAT is a highly respected exam because of its ability to accurately assess a student's proficiency in core academic areas, including English language skills, math, and reading comprehension. Many independent and private schools require students to submit their SSAT score as part of the admissions office. While it will not be the only factor taken into consideration by admission officials, it is one that will be carefully considered. Continue reading to learn more about the various levels of the SSAT and how Varsity Tutors can help give you the tools to create an efficient preparation strategy for your child.
What can Kansas City SSAT prep cover?
Professional SSAT prep resources can cover information found in all levels of the five sections of the SSAT, which include Math, Reading, Quantitative, Experimental, and Writing. The Middle and Upper Levels of the Quantitative portion of the SSAT have two parts, while the Elementary Level only contains one. In this section, your child's grade level appropriate skills in math will be evaluated. The Verbal and Reading sections of the SSAT assess your child's reading comprehension and language skills. The Experimental part of the exam is not scored. It is included to help test designers improve the SSAT. The Writing Prompt is also not used in the scoring process. However, unlike the Experimental section, the writing sample your child creates will be sent to all of the schools they apply to and may be used as part of the criteria the admissions board considers. Because it can be evaluated by schools, you may want to have your child work on improving or refining their writing techniques as part of their SSAT preparation efforts.
Some of the English language skills your child can review include vocabulary, spelling, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, analogies, prefixes, antonyms, suffixes, word roots, identifying the main idea of a passage, using context clues to define word meanings, and identifying an author's tone or style of writing.
A few of the math skills your child may need to review prior to taking the SSAT include addition, multiplication, subtraction, division, place value, fractions, measurement, number order, shapes, graph interpretation, word problems, solving the perimeter and area of circles, line equations, and properties of triangles.
While this may seem like an overwhelming amount of information, it's really just the tip of a large educational iceberg. However, professional SSAT prep solutions can help your child work towards improving their understanding of all of the concepts and skills evaluated on the SSAT.
How can a Kansas City SSAT prep course help my child prepare?
Courses are held in secure online classrooms that are similar to what your child is already familiar with. The teacher will give live instruction to the group and may then encourage discussions about the topic or give assignments to help students more fully incorporate the information. If your child needs clarification, they will have an opportunity to ask an instructor for assistance.
There are two enrollment options from which to choose. Your child can attend two-week or four-week courses. Each course is made of separate sections. This type of modular design means new sections start every week, so it's easy for your child to begin working on their SSAT preparation immediately.
It is unlikely that your child needs remedial assistance in every topic covered by the SSAT, but most children do need a little help with at least a few of the concepts. Unfortunately, it's difficult for parents to know where those deficiencies lie because of how much content is covered in each grade level. When you utilize professional SSAT prep resources, however, you don't have to worry critical information will be missed. Courses provide a comprehensive review appropriate for your child's grade level.
A prep course is excellent for students who thrive in social settings and are motivated to work harder when surrounded by peers or who need a comprehensive review to help them work towards their SSAT scoring goal.
How is working with a Kansas City SSAT tutor different from taking a course?
Working with a private instructor is a very different experience from participating in a Kansas City SSAT prep class. One of the main differences is in the amount of personalized attention each student receives. And of course, the teacher is responsible for delivering a comprehensive lesson to the entire group, facilitate group activities, and answer individual student questions. This does not leave a lot of time for the teacher to spend with each individual student. In a private tutoring session, on the other hand, the instructor's attention is wholly devoted to one student at a time. This learning format allows for entirely personalized instruction. The instructor has the opportunity to Discover your child's academic weaknesses and strengths, learning style, personality, and SSAT scores. This information can be leveraged to create custom learning sessions that address your child is unique academic needs.
Another important difference between courses and private instruction is in the amount of flexibility you will have when scheduling their sessions. Courses have limited session times available. When working with a private instructor, you can plan your child's sessions for more diverse times. You can schedule private tutoring throughout the week and on weekends during morning afternoon or evening hours.
Private sessions are ideal for students who thrive in one on one learning environments. They are also an excellent resource for families with hectic schedules who would not otherwise be able to provide this level of learning support to their child.

I am a young teacher that is dual certified in Mathematics and English Language Arts. I am enthusiastic about teaching and I love fostering a deeper understanding and love for mathematics in my students. I love working with middle school students and helping them develop study skills that will last them through their college careers. ... I believe the fundamental goal of teaching is to foster a love for learning. Learning takes place in many different circumstances and contexts. Humans have multiple learning styles: some learn best in lecture atmospheres, some are motivated by discussion, and others absorb best when they read and reflect on what they have read. The classroom setting can encourage or inhibit learning depending on the dominant learning style of each student. It is my goal as a tutor to instill learning and study strategies into my students to help them succeed in any classroom.
