Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Leong in Millcreek, UT
The student and I covered graphing linear inequalities, compound probability, adding mixed measures, scientific notation, and some more order of operations. He struggled the most with understanding how to graph using an equation's y-intercept and slope, but eventually learned it well. He was eager to improve on the material reviewed.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Kerlynn in Millcreek, UT
The student and I covered many concepts today, including the review of greater than and less than, number sense, addition and subtraction number sentences and word problems, place value, even and odd numbers, as well as the introduction to graphing data. The student was a little overwhelmed today because he tries so hard to get 100; however, he remained positive and still maintained the notion that math was fun and mimicked me by saying the work was challenging. I administered a comprehensive assessment of what we had been working on so far and he scored an 88%. I was proud of him. I left him with a pack of addition flashcards and subtraction flashcards to review as home enrichment. Strategies we used included modeling, repetition, teacher-directed instruction, echoing, guided instruction, guided learning, independent practice, counting on, the use of manipulatives, visual aids, and comprehension checks by breaking up word problems. The session went well, as usual.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by MaryEileen in Millcreek, UT
The student and I covered many topics; she and I did a concept paper on following directions/sequence in the form of a recipe. We also began the study of odd and even numbers and one-to-one correspondence. I had her complete a "dot to dot" picture where she had to skip count by 2's to finish the picture. On the bottom of the page, we wrote numbers from 1 through 30. I began by circling the odds in brown and the evens in orange and had her finish the pattern. Next, we did a one digit to one digit addition sheet. We first circled all the addends in the above colors, then the sums to continue to reinforce odd and even numbers. Finally, we read half of the book "You Stink," which is an ABC book (all the food the trash truck picks up is in ABC order). We practiced the phonemic sounds each letter makes.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Tiffany in Millcreek, UT
The student and I covered reading comprehension on a higher lexile level (4th/5th grade). He was very positive. We talked about taking notes as you read and going back into the text to find evidence, as well as using context clues and circling the words that he does not understand.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Jessica in Millcreek, UT
The student and I covered reading comprehension strategies and basic arithmetic, including adding and subtraction numbers. He seemed to have a good attitude towards learning and a strong understanding of his personal weaknesses. He scored 91% on his 2nd grade reading diagnostic. He is such a sweet little boy. I really look forward to our sessions to come.
