I've a passion for language, literature, culture and travel. Continuing to learn as I teach is vital to me and tutoring affords me the fantastic opportunity of sharing my knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. I got my English degree from Northern Arizona University where I was also an athletic trainer. While my love is admittedly poetry and literature, I am also a science geek and medicine called to me before teaching did. My TEFL with an IELTS certification allowed me to live and teach in Indonesia for almost three years. I taught a wide age range of students both in person then online extensively (as most of found ourselves in early 2020 and then too long after that). Being a curious bird by nature, I found the cultures and languages of Southeast Asia to be captivating. I asked as many questions of my students as they did of me and that helped us relate and work together. Some of my proudest times there (and when I returned home teaching online and in class) were when I would have students with those aha! I get it, I can do it ! breakthroughs. I am currently learning Spanish ( again) and definitely appreciate those forehead smacking aha! moments for myself, as well. For my IELTS and TOEFL students, we started from where they were and built on strengths while working on the tough stuff, primarily writing. I truly believe that listening to students is key for success for both parties. Continual communication is extremely important. Humor and having fun while learning is not only possible but necessary for me and is the way I prefer to teach and tutor. I have found that mistakes will and must be made to move forward, and keeping it light while still putting in the work helps immensely.

ACT Prep Tutor • +65 Subjects
I am an incoming college sophomoore studying Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I was one of the top scholars at Carmel High School in Indiana and have various experiences teaching and tutoring through leading the Carmel High School Science Olympiad team to Nationals for two years in a row. Many of my friends consistently come to me for help with various subjects because of my willingness to help and teach in a way that makes sense to everyone. My specialities are physics, chemistry, math, and economics but I am comfortable tutoring any STEM subject, the SAT, and the ACT. Some of my accomplishments include a perfect 36 ACT score, 800 on the Physics, Math Level 2, and Chemistry SAT subject tests, and a 5 on all the physics, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Macroeconomics, Computer Science, etc. AP exams. When teaching, I focus on making sure that not only do students understand different concepts, but also that students understand why and practical applications of the different concepts. As a recent high school graduate, I have a deep understanding of how high-schoolers think, what is covered in various courses now, and can connect with my students a lot more. Additionally, as an undergraduate teaching assistant at the College of Computing at Georgia Tech, I taught weekly recitation sections of 30 students and held weekly office hours. Therefore, I have lots of experience teaching and working with students.

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +24 Subjects
I have made a passion out of helping students get into their top-choice schools since I received a BA from Bates College in 2009. I began my teaching career with The Princeton Review and have helped literally hundreds of students fulfill their potentials in a relaxed, fun environment. My students for the SAT have routinely seen their scores go up enormously not only on practice exams but also on the days of the actual test. My students for the PSAT, SSAT, SAT Subject Test in Literature, AP Literature Exam, and AP Language Exam have also seen huge improvements in terms of their test-day performances. Additionally, I have helped numerous teenagers tackle the dreaded essay for college, guiding them as they illustrate their character, personality, and aspirations. Outside of teaching, I am writing a novel and take classes through The Writers Studio in Manhattan. In my free time, I enjoy playing soccer and tennis, following current events, and exploring New York City.

I am a current Medical student at the University of Missouri- Kansas City looking to help others on their journey to figuring out how to learn! I am in a 6 year program where I have finished my BA in biology and am now working on my MD. Through my years of education, I have struggled through countless classes until I found the perfect way to work through problems. I am hoping I can help others find that path, and eventually have my students become proficient self learners!I have experience working with students through volunteer work which allowed me to help students learn how to read one-on-one. Additionally, as a student myself, I know the time that a student chooses to get help is sacred time, as everyone lives such busy lives. Because of this, I do not believe in simple busy work or wasting any students time.Because of my experience as a medical student, I have a lot of exposure to Biology and Chemistry classes. I tutor these classes as I have taken high level courses in these subjects, and I am continuously updating my information through my own education.I also tutor ACT help! Through my own journey, I was able to improve my score by 7 points! I understood how stressful it was to choose resources, or how to complete practice questions, and would love to help people find a method of practice that works! I am able to help those who are looking to improve their score to create a plan that makes sense to them!I also can help in other subjects, including social sciences and reading comprehension in middle and high school. I believe that all students deserve to feel confident and ready to learn! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Accounting Tutor • +5 Subjects
I completed my Bachelor in Business with a concentration in Accounting from DeVry University. My plan is to start pursuing a MBA with a concentration in Finance later this year. I enjoy playing chess and golf. I am very competitive at both although I have been humbled more than a few times. I like to add fun and humor in just about every situation, when appropriate. Combine those traits with learning and we have creative platform for an exceptional learning environment. My tutoring strategy is to make learning fun and take the fright out of accounting. I want students to be able to use appropriate formulas when working problems. In addition, I like to show how this can be accomplished using Microsoft Excel. It is safe to say that by far, my favorite subjects are accounting and finance. I love to help individuals with accounting because I have learned it is more research and placement than it is math. In addition, I love solving problems. I am a critical thinker, therefore, I challenge others to use their analytical side of the brain more.My motto is "each one can reach one". Someone helped me and I owe it to them and myself to help others. We must remember to "pay it forward" whenever given the opportunity.

College English Tutor • +12 Subjects
I am a graduate of Dowling College which is located in Oakdale, New York. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and my Master of Science in Secondary Education. During my time at Dowling, I volunteered as a tutor for academically challenged students. I am also a volunteer for Suffolk Literacy where I work with adults on Long Island who are looking to improve their reading or English speaking skills. In my experience as a tutor, I've always tried to make lessons engaging and fun for my students. I believe that students learn best when they experience knowledge for themselves, while receiving guidance and encouragement from their teacher. I truly enjoy tutoring and want to help my students achieve academic success. I'm especially passionate about helping struggling readers. If a child has difficulty deciphering words and sentences, how can he/she be expected to grasp math, science, and social concepts presented in school? Good reading skills are important for excelling in school and succeeding in life. I am a strong advocate of the importance of education and believe it is one of the most significant messages we should impart to children and young adults. In my spare time I enjoy reading, running, bird watching, and old movie classics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Albany is home to 13 school districts serving over 17,000 students across 51 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Albany City School District, Bethlehem, Guilderland, or another local district, we match them with tutors who understand New York's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.
New York has rigorous academic standards across math, English language arts, science, and social studies, and tutors work directly with students to build mastery in these areas. Whether preparing for Regents exams, state assessments, or strengthening foundational skills, personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus on exactly where each student needs support—something that's harder to achieve in classrooms with the district average of 14.7 students per teacher.
Albany students commonly seek help with math (especially algebra, geometry, and regents prep), English language arts and writing, chemistry and biology, and test preparation for the SAT and ACT. We also work with students on study skills, organization, and confidence-building—especially important as they progress through New York's increasingly rigorous coursework in middle and high school.
The first session is a get-to-know-you meeting where the tutor learns about your student's academic history, current challenges, learning style, and goals. They'll assess where your student stands, discuss what success looks like, and create a personalized plan together. This foundation ensures every session that follows is focused and productive.
Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—we work with families to find an arrangement that fits their budget and schedule. Many Albany families find that personalized tutoring prevents the need for more expensive interventions later, and the focused 1-on-1 approach means faster progress compared to group settings.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have deep subject expertise and proven teaching experience. Tutors are carefully selected and vetted, and many have backgrounds in education, advanced degrees in their subject areas, or years of professional experience. Each tutor is matched to your student based on their specific needs and learning goals.
Absolutely. Regents exams are a key part of New York's education system, and tutors specialize in helping students master the content and test-taking strategies needed to succeed. Whether your student is preparing for Regents in math, English, science, or social studies, personalized instruction allows tutors to focus on the specific topics and question types where they need the most support.
Simply reach out to Varsity Tutors with information about your student's grade level, subject, and goals. We'll match them with a qualified tutor, schedule an initial session, and get started. Most families see the benefit of tutoring quickly—especially when the tutor is focused entirely on their student's needs rather than managing a classroom of 15 or more.
