I am a graduate of the University of South Carolina and I received my Bachelor of Arts in Humanities with a focus on French. When I began studying French in High School, I had a desire to speak French as fluently as natives so I created my own methods for learning vocabulary and perfecting the accent. I worked with these methods diligently and they were so effective that in college I won the Prix D'Honneur in the category of "Spoken French." Today, many years out of college, most of the French people that meet me either think that I am a French native or that I was born in a French-speaking country which brings me so much joy! It is this love of the language and these methods that I hope to impart to you during our French Conversation, French Level 1 and French Level 2 sessions. I spent my junior year studying at L'Universite Paul Valery in Montpellier, France and have returned to France many times after graduation. Since then, I have lived in London and New York City, where I tutored adults and taught children French. For years I have been absolutely enamored with French culture and have participated in New York's Bastille Day events, worked with the Avignon-New York Film Festival, and gone on hunts for the-most-French-tasting-croissants-in-New York. A few facts about me: I speak beginner level Italian, I moved to New York City to perform in musical theater as a tap dancer and, I had a small speaking part in a French film with Gerard Depardieu, although I was not in a scene with him!

I am passionate about teaching students to read, because once you can read you can learn anything. I always tell students one of my favorite quotes: "Everything is hard when you don't know how to do it and easy once you learn how."

For the past 9 years, I have been teaching! For four years here in Austin I taught Bilingual Elementary education, teaching students reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in both Spanish and English. Before that I was teaching ESL abroad. I taught in several different countries including Japan, Korea, and Argentina. I had the opportunity to teach all age groups: from two year olds to people in their seventies! I love to make content fun and memorable by using visuals, games, songs, physical activity, or any other device that will help students make cognitive connections to content material. I believe that all students learn the material differently, and that all students can be successful given the appropriate instruction.I graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Spanish minor. Although I earned a liberal arts degree, I also followed a pre-med path and studied Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Biochemistry, and Genetics. During my time at University, I did a study abroad in Merida, Venezuela. While living abroad I completed the Cambridge University CELTA, the Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Albany is home to 13 school districts serving over 17,000 students across 51 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Albany City School District, Bethlehem, Guilderland, or another local district, we match them with tutors who understand New York's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.

New York has rigorous academic standards across math, English language arts, science, and social studies, and tutors work directly with students to build mastery in these areas. Whether preparing for Regents exams, state assessments, or strengthening foundational skills, personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to focus on exactly where each student needs support—something that's harder to achieve in classrooms with the district average of 14.7 students per teacher.

Albany students commonly seek help with math (especially algebra, geometry, and regents prep), English language arts and writing, chemistry and biology, and test preparation for the SAT and ACT. We also work with students on study skills, organization, and confidence-building—especially important as they progress through New York's increasingly rigorous coursework in middle and high school.

The first session is a get-to-know-you meeting where the tutor learns about your student's academic history, current challenges, learning style, and goals. They'll assess where your student stands, discuss what success looks like, and create a personalized plan together. This foundation ensures every session that follows is focused and productive.

Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—we work with families to find an arrangement that fits their budget and schedule. Many Albany families find that personalized tutoring prevents the need for more expensive interventions later, and the focused 1-on-1 approach means faster progress compared to group settings.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have deep subject expertise and proven teaching experience. Tutors are carefully selected and vetted, and many have backgrounds in education, advanced degrees in their subject areas, or years of professional experience. Each tutor is matched to your student based on their specific needs and learning goals.

Absolutely. Regents exams are a key part of New York's education system, and tutors specialize in helping students master the content and test-taking strategies needed to succeed. Whether your student is preparing for Regents in math, English, science, or social studies, personalized instruction allows tutors to focus on the specific topics and question types where they need the most support.

Simply reach out to Varsity Tutors with information about your student's grade level, subject, and goals. We'll match them with a qualified tutor, schedule an initial session, and get started. Most families see the benefit of tutoring quickly—especially when the tutor is focused entirely on their student's needs rather than managing a classroom of 15 or more.
