The hardest part of a college essay isn't writing well — it's figuring out which story to tell and how to make it unmistakably yours. Clare breaks the brainstorming process into concrete steps, moving from a broad list of experiences to a focused narrative with a clear emotional arc. Rated 5.0 by students, she's particularly sharp at helping applicants avoid the generic "lesson I learned" trap.

A strong college essay needs a genuine voice and a story that admissions readers haven't seen a hundred times — and Esteban's background as a cultural anthropologist makes him especially sharp at drawing out what's distinctive about a student's experiences. He teaches students to move from vague personal statements to essays with specific scenes, honest reflection, and a clear narrative arc. Rated 4.9 by students.
A strong college essay doesn't summarize a résumé — it reveals how a student thinks. Andrew went through the admissions process recently enough to remember what worked when he earned his spot in Boston College's Carroll School of Management Honors Program, and he applies that experience to brainstorming angles, sharpening structure, and cutting the filler that admissions officers skim past.
A strong college essay doesn't summarize a résumé — it reveals how a student thinks. David teaches applicants to find the one specific moment or detail that makes their perspective unmistakable, then build outward from there. His background in history and writing means he knows how to shape a narrative that feels both personal and structurally tight.
A college essay that sounds like every other applicant's essay won't get read past the first paragraph. Jennifer digs into a student's actual experiences — the specific moments, contradictions, and details that admissions officers remember — and shapes them into a narrative with a clear arc. She's an avid writer herself, which means she edits for voice and rhythm, not just correctness.
A strong college essay doesn't summarize a résumé — it reveals how a student thinks. Arielle teaches applicants to find the specific story or moment that admissions readers will remember, then coaches them through drafting and revising until the voice on the page sounds unmistakably like theirs. Her 4.8 rating speaks to the trust students place in her feedback.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.
I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals!
I am a graduate of Washington University in St Louis, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with minors in Humanities and Anthropology. Since graduation, I have worked as a tutor, teacher, and director of tutors at a charter public middle school in Boston. During this time I also received my Masters in Mild to Moderate Disabilities from Simmons College. I have worked extensively with students with a range of abilities, including students with specific learning disabilities, emotional impairments, dyslexia, and ADHD. My teaching experience has given me a deep understanding of the knowledge and habits essential to academic success and has given me the opportunity to hone a variety of strategies that ensure students at each level can achieve their academic goals. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my favorite ones are Reading, Elementary/Middle School Math, History, and Test Prep. In my experience, tutoring is the most rewarding when a student has that "aha!" moment and achieves a new level of understanding and confidence in his/her abilities. I am a firm believer in the transformative power of education, and I see my role to be that of a facilitator and coach who is there to help the student reach his/her goals through individualized support and rigorous practice. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, practicing my Spanish, and discovering new music. I am also an avid traveler and just got back from a 3 month trip to South America. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

Frequently Asked Questions
Your first session is all about understanding your goals and writing style. A tutor will ask about your target schools, essay prompts, and any drafts you've started, then provide initial feedback on your voice and structure. This gives you a clear roadmap for how personalized 1-on-1 instruction can strengthen your essays before submission deadlines.
Tutors work with you to move beyond surface-level observations and craft a thesis that's specific, arguable, and compelling to admissions officers. Through guided questioning and targeted feedback, they help you clarify your main idea and ensure every paragraph supports it—a critical skill that separates strong essays from good ones.
Rather than generic feedback, tutors provide specific, actionable comments on each draft—identifying where your voice shines, where arguments need strengthening, and where wordiness can be tightened. This iterative process teaches you revision strategies you'll use throughout college, not just for admissions essays.
Writer's block often stems from unclear ideas or perfectionism on the first draft. Tutors help you brainstorm freely, organize your thoughts, and write a rough version without judgment—then refine it together. Many students find that talking through their ideas with a tutor breaks the mental logjam and gets words flowing.
Admissions officers read thousands of essays and can spot inauthentic writing instantly. Tutors help you balance formality with personality, encouraging you to use natural language and specific details that reveal who you are. The goal is polished writing that still sounds like you, not an overly formal version of yourself.
Ideally, start in the summer before senior year or early fall to give yourself time for multiple drafts and revisions. For students in Albany with busy school schedules across our 13 school districts, beginning early means you won't feel rushed and can focus on quality over speed. Even if you're already working on essays, personalized tutoring can significantly improve your drafts before deadlines.
Absolutely. Tutors can work with you on your main Common App essay, supplemental essays for specific schools, and short-answer prompts. Each essay requires a different approach, and personalized instruction ensures you're tailoring your voice and content to what each school is looking for.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in college essay writing and understand what admissions officers want to see. You'll be matched based on your specific needs, timeline, and essay topics, so you get personalized instruction from someone experienced in helping students like you succeed.
