ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension Tutoring FAQ
Even if you do not plan to study literature in college, the ability to derive meaningful interpretations from prose will inevitably play a major role in your success in college-level courses and eventual career. College students must work to improve their reading comprehension beginning with the courses in their very first semester of college. Certain schools use the scores provided by the ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension test to gauge the appropriate difficulty of a course for an incoming student. While you may not put too much stress on this relatively short exam, it can have wide-ranging consequences for your college education. If you find yourself unprepared on test day and cannot showcase all of your abilities, you may end up assigned to a course much too easy for you. Avoid this situation entirely by preparing your skills before exam day with the help of ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension tutoring.
Impersonal resources like study guides and classroom-based review can only help you so much in improving your reading comprehension skills. These cannot provide you with instruction customized to your specific strengths and weaknesses. Whether you find literary devices confusing or have a hard time identifying the main idea of a passage, you will get prepackaged, one-size-fits-all instruction from cookie-cutter resources. This is not the case with personal tutoring. Private tutors can customize a series of lesson plans for you based on an in-depth analysis of your current strengths and weaknesses, and any specific concerns you may have about the test's format or content. As a result of this custom-tailored approach, you can receive instruction focused on just the topics that you struggles with most. This process even avoids wasting any time reviewing material that you have already mastered. In addition, because of the one-on-one environment in which ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension tutoring sessions take place, you can have the full attention of a knowledgeable teacher who can answer questions as they arise.
Private tutoring is also convenient, allowing you to schedule your sessions to take place when and where they best fit into your busy schedule. Can you fit a meeting with your tutor in between classes? Perhaps it is easier to meet later in the evening, or on the weekend. This flexibility makes these tutoring arrangements more accommodating to your needs because, whether or not your schedule is full, you still want to perform to the best of your abilities and maximize your chance of a high score. The barriers of booking a preparatory course given at a set time are removed. You can also choose to meet at your own home or any location that is convenient and comfortable for you, with the goal being to accommodate your busy life and to quell any anxieties there may be. You can even request to have face-to-face online sessions using our live learning platform.
Although the ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension test has just 20 questions, don't let the length fool you. It is important to read at your best. You may be proficient at identifying the main ideas of a passage, and finding direct statements and supporting ideas, but test jitters and a lack of understanding of the test structure can throw you off. You'll need ample practice ahead of time to avoid such problems. Since your ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension tutor has prepared for, taken, and taught the test before, they can show you everything there is to know, even providing helpful tips and tricks to work through tough problems. Plus, each tutoring session can be adapted to your own weaknesses, concerns, and learning style. To learn more about the advantages of ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension tutoring, or to get connected with a qualified, independent instructor, contact the educational directors at Varsity Tutors today!

The student and I worked mostly on the essay portion of the test in this session. We discussed the content of his essay. His writing was strong but his thesis needed work in addressing the part of the question that asked about what the experience means to the writer. We addressed that and came up with a better thesis together, and I asked him to work that aspect in to his essay when rewriting it in the spots we discussed. We then did one reading comprehension passage.
Today the student and I began discussing subject-verb agreement. From there we moved onto reading comprehension strategies, and the student did two practice passages with questions. After, she completed some arithmetic problems.
The student's finalized test date was recently scheduled, and I believe he is ready for the exam. He understands and manipulates the concepts introduced in the practice booklet very well, and can solve most problems quickly and correctly. Besides this, he has developed strong mathematical skills that extend beyond the exam, which he demonstrated in this session by easily solving some difficult problems I created. During our next session, I hope to work through only problems that could be on his exam, focusing on execution time.
We went over more challenging aspects of grammar that show up on the basic skills test for teachers. Some of the topics covered included distinguishing between commonly confused words like further-farther, affect-effect, whom-that, and others. We used the provided paper practice test as source material with which to check our understanding.
Today we worked solely on prepping the student for the state test. Her teacher had given her a number of short response questions to work on, and we spent our time working on those. We also discussed some more general information about the test, such as how much time she will have for each question. She does a good job on these questions. We managed to get through all 3 prompts, though, and she is getting better at pulling out specific information from the passage to support her ideas.
For our second session, the student and I worked on the Reading Comprehension test. We talked about the two types of tasks that the test requires, and explored some strategies for each one. For the questions based on short passages, we discussed in particular how to distinguish the main idea of a passage from other related or supporting ideas that it contains. For questions dealing with the relationships between sentences, we talked about the sometimes subtle differences, between different types of logical relationships, that one sentence can have to another. He continues to be an engaged and dedicated student who asks excellent proactive questions, and applies himself to picking up the material that we cover, which in many cases, he is able to do quite quickly.
