I am a 2016 graduate of the University of Southern Maine. I have my Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Minor in English. I was selected to be the student commencement speaker for my graduating class and have additional experience with public speaking and group facilitation. I graduated at the top of my economics department while in undergrad and served as a teacher's assistant (TA) for two of my economics professors while in school. I was also a part of the women's outdoor track and field team and was co-chair of multiple student groups on campus. I tutored my classmates in English, writing, public speaking, economics, and business primarily but have assisted with other subjects as well, such as statistics.I truly enjoy working with students as it is most rewarding to help students reach their full academic potential, which is not always realized in a classroom setting alone. While I tutor a range of subjects, I am most passionate about tutoring writing because good writing is truly foundational and essential in so many areas of life. I also enjoy teaching students good study habits and organizational techniques that are conducive to greater learning and set students up for higher academic achievement and success. I would describe my teaching style as focused and collaborative, but also casual so as to make my students feel like they can ask questions at any time throughout the learning process. One of my overarching goals with tutoring is to inspire student interest in subjects that have been troublesome to them, because oftentimes it is not the subject itself, but how the subject is taught that can inspire interest.

I graduated from The University of Southern Maine with a B/A in English in 2009. While I was doing my English studies I was also earning my teaching certification through their Teachers for Elementary and Middle School Program. Upon receiving my certification I was hired to work with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders under Title 1 which supports low income school districts in Math and English. This work allowed me to actively be engaged in the students daily school life and work one-on-one with them inside the classroom. I was also allowed to collaborate with the teachers to modify lessons and materials for individual students. It was during this work that I realized my niche for teaching students in small groups or as individuals. My greatest asset in teaching is being able to connect with all students on a personal level and using that to advance their learning in education.Since my work under Title 1 I have returned to school and earned my Masters in Education, my certification in Secondary English, and secured a job in a resource room at Scarborough High School (a top 10 high school in the state of Maine).This involves working with students in all subject areas in all four grade levels. I find the work to be highly rewarding and I enjoy coming into my classroom everyday to experience a new and challenging behavior.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Communication at California State University, Chico, and my Master of Arts in American and New England Studies from The University of Southern Maine. I also hold a Secondary Education Credential from Chapman University. For the last four years, I've been a substitute teacher of most subjects in grades K-12 and a private tutor. Prior to that, I was a high school Social Studies teacher for fifteen years. I specialize in all Social Studies subjects for all grades, as well as English Language Arts, Reading, Writing, Literature, Humanities, Editing and Revision, Organization and Study Skills, Communication and Public Presentation. I can also assist with Math in grades 1-3 and Science in grades 1-5. At the same time, I'm a historian who has traveled over 40,000 miles around the United States as a Cultural Studies scholar and worked as a volunteer and board member of a local historical society. My short stories and flash fiction have been published in literary outlets, and I am a member of a writer's critique group in which fiction is peer-reviewed and edited. I'm passionate about being an educator because I value the cultivation of a love for lifelong skill-building and believe that knowledge is power. I am interested in helping you in your special needs whether it is adult English proficiency, elementary school curriculum, French language learning, or reading and writing tutoring. I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I am a rising sophomore at Harvard College and am about to declare as a Mechanical Engineering concentrator, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. I've always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with my peers and those around me and have done so in both formal and informal settings. I've been a tutor for both Math and Spanish programs in high school and enjoyed the strides I made with students. I am willing to tutor any subject I have a background in, but am strong in mathematics, the sciences, Spanish, history, writing, and ACT prep. I enjoy teaching mathematics most due to the joy I can see in children once they master a topic and can answer even pointed questions meant to stump them, and maybe even put their knowledge to real world use. As a tutor, I like to give a strong foundation to orient my student, and then gradually grant them more freedom and independence until they can feel themselves grasp the concept, pointing out pitfalls or common errors along the way; teachers who used these methods on me always left the most lasting impressions. Outside of my studies, I really enjoy listening to music, both old favorites and new interests, reading classics, and gaming/playing basketball with my friends.
