Sunnyvale ACCUPLACER ESL Tutoring FAQ
Many colleges and universities rely on the results of the ACCUPLACER tests to place incoming students into appropriately challenging courses for their first semester of undergraduate studies. If you grew up speaking a language other than English, you may be asked to take the ACCUPLACER ESL test. These tests are designed to measure your ability to understand written and spoken English in order to help your school place you in the classes best suited to your current mastery of the language. The exam consists of four sections: the Language Use section measures how well you understand the rules of English grammar, the Listening section measures how well you can answer questions about recorded English conversations, the Reading Skills section tests your written English comprehension by asking questions about short prose passages, and the Sentence Meaning section examines how well you can understand English sentences. Each section comprises 20 questions, designed to measure proficiency in each area, each of which your ACCUPLACER ESL tutor is highly experienced to help you with.
The test has a direct influence on class placement. It is therefore important that you demonstrate your knowledge to the best of your ability on test day in order to avoid being placed in a class that fails to challenge you and develop your language skills. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with ACCUPLACER ESL tutoring. An independent instructor can help you prepare for your placement tests in an organized and efficient way, helping you gain the skills to perform to the best of your potential. You'll have one shot to prove your abilities. Support in advance will help to calm your nerves and fill in any gaps, so you can prove your true strengths.
Varsity Tutors understands that you have a unique set of strengths and weaknesses when it comes to your mastery of the English language. To accommodate the variable needs of different students, ACCUPLACER ESL tutoring is custom-tailored to each student's specific academic profile. Our educational directors can help you connect with the independent tutor best suited to working with you based on your current skill level, your preferred learning style, and any concerns you may have about preparing for your ACCUPLACER ESL exam. When you start working with your tutor, they can analyze your current English skills. Based on their findings, your tutor can develop a unique set of lesson plans to focus your ACCUPLACER ESL tutoring sessions on improving your understanding of the material that gives you the most difficulty.
Your personal tutoring curriculum can focus on bolstering your weakest skills and filling any gaps in your knowledge. It's possible to work through these with your tutor at whatever pace allows you to best learn the material. You don't have to worry about keeping up with other students or slowing down to match the pace of a class. In addition, all ACCUPLACER ESL tutoring is one-on-one, so you can have questions answered as soon as you think of them and can receive immediate feedback on your work throughout every session. The ability to schedule lessons on a flexible basis is another perk. Your private tutor can meet at any time that is best, to account for a full set of classes and other activities. If your schedule is so booked, they can set up a face-to-face online session using our live learning platform. It's possible to meet in the comfort of your kitchen or living room, or at a local library. The best thing about working with a tutor is that the decisions are up to you.

The student and I finished up the math portion of the practice exam after briefly discussing the essay conclusion that I had her revise for homework after our last session. After finishing the math section, we made a list of math test-taking strategies, such as skipping and returning to more complicated problems, eliminating or using answer choices, categorizing problems according to concept in order to find the proper approach to solving, etc. We then began looking over some additional math practice I assigned her, in order to strengthen her skills with problems involving percents, averages, and proportions. I asked her to finish a second essay she had started and to look over some of the math problems she'd had trouble with for homework.
We reviewed linking and action verbs. We discussed adverbs and prepositional phrases and then the student practiced problems with these. We went through tips on taking the math portion of the exam. The student did 10 arithmetic problems using the tips discussed. The student went through seven word problems.
As the student has a history test coming up soon, we spent a great deal of time reviewing the content that would be covered on his exam. He explained that the vocabulary from the various chapters is a big part of the test, so I quizzed him on the vocabulary words as well as important facts from the readings. I also created a vocabulary test for him to fill out that resembles the way the test is formatted. We spent the remainder of the session reviewing his science material.
We spent this session reviewing the practice problems I created for the student two weeks previously. Now we are focusing on the breadth of his knowledge, so he will be prepared to answer a variety of possible questions.
We read 2 passages and a poem, and responded to comprehension questions as well as open-ended responses. The student is doing great at turning the questions into a statement. He needs extra practice with grammar and spelling within his responses.
We spent this session going over an online edition of the teaching exam. In particular, we focused on reading comprehension passages and question sets. In a previous session we explicitly focused on enhancing our internal dialogue, including frequent comprehension checks and section summarizing. This session, we worked on breaking down question prompts and answer choices. Question types covered included those that required making distinctions between main ideas and supporting details and between facts and opinions. We planned for the student to complete the remainder of the exam on his own before our next session, so we can target our attention on the most challenging aspects of that practice exam at our next meeting.
