I firmly believe that the vast majority of students who believe they are "bad at math" have tragically internalized this identity without true justification. I have personally seen students of mine shed that persona and it is a special thing to witness.

Nim
Pre-Algebra Tutor • +20 Subjects
My name is Nim. I graduated cum laude and departmental honors with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, and a minor in Writing & Rhetoric. In college, I realized that certain classes can be an obstacle for students as there are not enough of a friendly environment for them to express their concerns. For my tutoring approach, I first let students know that it is okay to make mistakes and that practice can help you improve progressively. I try to allow students express concerns they have regarding to the material presented from class and then we directly approach the lesson by having an understanding of what the student does or does not know. After the lesson, I would review the points that we learned and having a goal of students practicing material on their own. The method can be adjusted based on student's individual needs. I have a year experience in teaching organic chemistry and physical chemistry in college. I worked directly with any students who needed additional assistance, but also focus on one-on-one tutoring. These were the students who needed extra help, so I work with them during class to make sure they didn't fall behind and clarify questions they might have. I held review sessions in Organic Chemistry, where I choose questions to review and occasionally teach important points to understand in a topic. I want to benefit the students I work with as much as possible, therefore I welcome any feedback from the students can provide. I am easy to reach and will always provide fast responses. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson.

I'm currently a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University double majoring in Molecular/Cellular Biology and Public Health, while also minoring in Financial Economics. I am passionate about tutoring because it allows me to help others succeed and thrive, which means a lot to me. I have previously been in situations when I was confused about a subject, and I would love to help out and clear up any questions. Tutor STEM and the SA are of my favorite subjects to tutor because it allows me to guide students through complex problems, helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Personally, seeing students' "aha" moments when they grasp a tough concept is incredibly rewarding and motivates me to continue tutoring.

I am an adjunct instructor/professor of business, marketing, and management with 27 years of college and university teaching experience. Furthermore, I have taught in other countries such as Russia, and I go back and forth to France, which is my origin. Subsequently, I hold four Masters degrees which include an MBA in Management from Long Island University, Masters of Liberal Studies with a concentration in History and Political Science from StonyBrook University, an EdM in Education Administration from Columbia University, and an MLS in Library Science from St John's University. I completed my PhD in Management at Walden University. For the past 16 years, I have been a private tutor in the following subject areas; English, Writing, French, Basic Italian, History, Psychology, Social sciences, and Bible Studies. Furthermore, I am ESL certified from the Language School in Montpellier, France, where I obtained a certification in TOEFL and TOESL. I am experienced in APA format scholarly writing and can assist in all levels of written expression. It is difficult to say what my favorite subject is because I love tutoring and teaching them all, as I truly enjoy helping and mentoring students. If I had to say what my favorite subjects are, I would say the business area because of my teaching experience, the languages, and the writing areas. However, I truly enjoy all the subjects especially ethics and social sciences and hard sciences. Teaching and Tutoring Philosophy In my 27 years of teaching experience on the college and university level, and 10 years of tutoring experience, I have developed my own teaching and tutoring philosophy. From these experiences, I have learned that people have diverse learning styles. For example, some of my students are visual learners, and others are auditory learners as well as kinesthetic learners. Therefore, I have taken on a similar philosophy to Howard Gardner who believed there are many different kinds of intelligences and students have different ways they learn best. Hence, I employ many different learning modalities in my teaching including lecture, presentation, question and answer, group work, brainstorming, visual aids, and role-playing simulations. For tutoring, I use visual and auditory, based on the materials that the student provides. I try to use diverse learning methods that are tailored to each student. My philosophy is that all people can learn given the proper supports and tools. Learning curves vary in length but everyone can achieve and succeed with the proper supports. In addition, I believe that critical thinking and high order cognitive learning is crucial to success in higher education and careers. It is important for students to learn how to compare, contrast, apply, analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and implement. Critical thinking is excellent training in executive decision making and judgment which is crucial for students entering the work place or advancing their careers. I have a strong passion for teaching and it gives me great satisfaction when I see students grow in their knowledge and critical thinking as a result of what I can impart upon them. My interests outside academia include going out with friends, dancing, karaoke, general and space science, sports (hockey, American football, basketball, etc), technology, statistics, music, traveling, French culture, experiencing multicultural diversity, and classic cars. In closing, I think it is important for a tutor to be a knowledgeable teacher, a role model, a mentor, as well as patient and open-minded to all cultures and learning abilities, and styles. My goal is to fulfill that role which is who i admire li Manning who is my role model.

I am a researcher who graduated with a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Penn State University and a B.S. in applied physics from Columbia University. I have found great passion in teaching and mentoring students in physics and materials science, whether through informal educational training activities at the Discovery Space, assisting in laboratory classrooms for undergraduates, or helping students with difficult problem sets for thermodynamics or quantum mechanics. I've seen the best success when students can interact with a complicated concept in multiple ways and pull on their own experiences as metaphors to the system in question - after all, this is part of how science is actually done! Currently in my spare time, I enjoy reading, strategy games, and learning Mandarin.
Peter
AP Statistics Tutor • +33 Subjects
Hi - I'm Peter. I've always had a preference for math and science, which explains my undergrad choice in engineering. I graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I received my MBA (Industrial Management) from the Wharton Graduate Division at U. of Pa. My primary work experience prior to teaching was in business planning and finance (more math). I started teaching because I enjoyed helping students at Baruch College prep for graduate school entrance exams (GMAT, LSAT, GRE). Later on, I aided community college students to break through their difficulties in basic math, algebra, quantitative literacy and statistics/probability (remedial math courses). Many of these students were the first in their families to attend college. I've been teaching math for 25+ years, both in a classroom setting and, more recently, on-line. I prefer to use a whiteboard and other visuals to present the problems and explain the methodology and steps that lead to the solution. If you are my student I would encourage you to first think through the problem and work it through on your own whenever possible, as it helps to foster self-confidence. Then I can step in and assist where I can to guide you to the correct solution. I like to put myself in my student's place in order to understand what hurdle(s) they need to overcome to solve the math question. I can explain approaches to the solution in several ways until it makes sense to you. I am available pretty much during the week or on weekends from late morning until early evenings and can make exceptions when necessary. I would be happy to hold an initial exploratory session at no charge just so we can get to know each other and agree on what we can accomplish together.

I am senior at Cornell University majoring in Philosophy and Government with minors in Law and Society and Near Eastern Studies. Hailing from Central New Jersey, I have had years of tutoring experience mostly focusing on the liberal arts for all ages. My priority is to create an interactive and adaptive learning environment in which each session I can familiarize myself with the student's needs and habits. The student steers the lesson and lets me know how I can help and I do my best to ensure each lesson is tailored to them personally. Learning is a vulnerable and valuable experience, one which I am honored to play a part in. Please feel free to ask about the relevant courses I have taken at Cornell as well as my experience in high school as a National Honor Society tutor.

I am a graduate of Brown University who tutors high school students via Skype or in person in the SATs, PSATs, and/or the SAT Math 2 Subject Test. I had a wonderful tutor for the SATs and for the SAT Math 2 Tests, so I understand how the standardized test tutoring process can be productive, fun, and ultimately successful. I also understand the importance of tailoring the process to the students individual abilities and needs. In high school, I tutored elementary school students in math, reading, and writing, and I tutored my classmates at my school's math center. I am passionate about film and film production, and in my spare time I also enjoy reading and basketball.
