Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Melissa in Hendersonville, TN
Today the student and I finished a Punnett square worksheet for biology, then focused on finishing his algebra test review and studying for the upcoming test. We did a few more vocab study quizzes for English as well. He has a geography test review to work on and an abstract to write for biology.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Erin in Hendersonville, TN
There's been a change in how the student's Human Geography class is structured, so today we looked at this change and how to help her approach the information effectively. Rather than lecturing, this teacher is asking them to learn the information on their own from slideshows he's provided, and her concern was how she was going to be able to pay attention to the material throughout. We went through the slides together, asked some critical questions, and developed examples for the concepts, and we were finished before she knew it. I said, "See how much less boring it was to engage with it that way instead of just going through it slide by slide?" She agreed, and we moved on to developing materials to help her retain the terms for a quiz this week. I hope this critical approach will help her retain the information in a way that will allow her to be successful on the tests. We're going to bring the AP book into the discussion in our next meeting.

The student and I went over an assignment for her Communications class. She had already covered the first 2 questions of the assignment, which we discussed before going over the remaining 5 questions. She had a clear understanding of the concepts of the assignment and the elements from the chapter covered that were needed to reply to the questions.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Aleschia in Hendersonville, TN
The student informed me that she was reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. For the novel, she needed to write five traits about each of the characters (Scout, Atticus, Jem, Dill, Boo Radley, and Ms. Caroline/ Calpurnia). Before she did the assignment, I discussed some terms that she needed to know to properly analyze the text. The terms included characterization (direct and indirect), main and minor characters, protagonist and antagonist, and static and dynamic characters. Once we defined the terms, she looked for quotes in the text that demonstrated direct or indirect characterization. Afterwards, she marked these quotes with sticky notes and included them under the correct character. Finally, she expounded on each character in preparation for class the next day.

We reviewed the student's math homework (symmetry) and did an oral review for his Chapter Test coming up! In order to stay focused, I have asked him to study by reading out loud. Any concept he doesn't understand, he should write out and do practice problems.
