Leeds Social Work Tutoring FAQ
Social workers are on the front lines of the struggle to make our world a better place. As essential as social work is, learning to do it well is not a trivial undertaking. It is, in a sense, applied social engineering. Part psychology, part sociology, and part government studies, none of it is simple or straightforward. Social work tutoring, however, can help unravel the tangle of bureaucracy and legalese that you will encounter. Social work tutors are more than knowledgeable -- many are experienced teachers or have real-world experience from working in the field. The theoretical knowledge you have to digest is difficult enough, even with the assistance of social work tutoring. Add to that the practical difficulties of knowing which programs are operating in a given area and which people qualify, and there is an impressive degree of complexity.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with personal social work tutors who have a solid understanding of what you are going through. Our educational directors are available to help you with your student profile, which can tell potential tutors about your habits, schedule, learning style, syllabus, and anything else that may play a role in your tutoring.
Although classes are certainly useful, the best guide is someone who has been through the maze and lived to tell the tale. Where university classes are on a one-to-many scale with broad general principles, one-to-one tutoring can focus on the particular questions and challenges faced by you as an individual. Better still, a good tutor can work with you to help you learn the interpersonal relationship skills that are so critical to thriving in work that is, by definition, social. It's not enough to just be personable or to be able to get along with a broad swath of people, you need to be able to navigate the hierarchical structure of government. A focus on these skills of cooperation and coordination is too frequently lacking in formal coursework, and learning them on-the-job can have disastrous consequences for the unwary. Social work tutoring, however, can offer a detailed guide not just to coursework, but to the social milieu into which you will enter once your degree is finished. Better still, you can ask your tutor for advice on making better connections with your course instructors. Teachers are often the gateway to good internships and are invaluable sources for letters of recommendation. Faceless bodies in giant classrooms cannot expect strong references, but students who are well-known and active participants can.
Each tutoring session revolves around you and your needs. You receive a personalized tutoring curriculum that is designed to focus on the concepts that you need to develop and strengthen. Your tutor has a variety of strategies to accomplish this that are attuned to your learning style. You may receive personal learning materials from your tutor, such as relevant articles, books, movies, news reports, and more. You may be tasked with socialization exercises that are crafted to encourage you to embolden your capabilities in interacting with others, or you may spend a session learning about the hierarchy of the government. The great thing is, it all comes down to how you'd like the session to be spent. If you need to focus on one concept over another or return to a previous one, you can. Your tutor will patiently continue to work with you until you have a solid understanding of the concepts you need to know. Social work is a valuable field that brings together many theoretical topics. It can be confusing, but a good tutor can help you succeed in your quest to help others. Your tutor can meet with you in your home, at a coffee shop, or anywhere you choose, including via the online live learning platform. Contact Varsity Tutors today to get connected with an experienced social work tutor!

Recent Leeds Social Work Tutoring Session Notes
We started the session with the student telling me how the exam went. We talked about what went well, what was a struggle, and what we could do to better prepare for the next test. After that, we moved on to the next unit in her course, in which the class is reading a memoir about the author's experience with Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder. I gave the student a general overview of what Tourette's is and we watched some informational videos online to get a better understanding of the disorder's manifestations. Then we wrote an outline of the important information from the first chapter of the memoir.
The student needed to write, polish, and turn in an essay offering a solution to the problem of evil by the end of the day. He had already read the relevant texts prior to the session, but had not written very much yet. I discussed with him the basics of the problem and two typical solutions. I helped him edit for clarity, grammar, and organization. The essay is now a little too long, so we are meeting again tonight to cut it down to the appropriate 700-800 word length.
Today we worked on the self-reflection for the group project- using a human rights lens to be able to assess the project and work that was completed. The reflection had a number of different pieces required, but we worked diligently through all of them. The student left with a full draft to type up and edit before our next meeting.
In her course, the student has moved on from Sentential Logic to Predicate Logic. In this session we focused on symbolization of English sentences in Predicate logic with an emphasis on universal and existential quantifiers. I helped the student learn to identify the main logical operators and quantifiers in English sentences by paying attention to certain key phrases. The student has shown progress from her last session and is now able to do many of the problems on her own.
Covered introductions, went over material student feels good with and what material needs practice. Student and tutor reviewed Erikson's theories but student has good understanding of these stages already. Rest of session student and tutor did 16 practice questions together and focused on why the correct answers were correct and same with incorrect answers. Many questions on exams focus on BEST/FIRST questions. Tutor has an acronym she used for test-taking and will share with student at next session. Overall tutor gained a better understanding of how student wants to proceed and the fact that student is confident and skilled in material but simply needs help with test-taking itself and the way the test is worded.
