Varsity Tutors strives to connect people with solid CDL test prep services that can allow them to build their skills in Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) operation. Depending on the classification of CDL you are pursuing, you will have to take different Knowledge and Skills Tests. These tests are designed to assess your knowledge, physical ability, skills, and experience as it relates to the CDL you are interested in obtaining. A CDL course can be just the thing to bolster your test prep efforts. Our academic advisers can answer your questions and help you connect with CDL prep today!
Special types of CMVs will require drivers to pass additional tests, which a CDL class can help you prepare for. You can review the endorsements placed on your CDL upon passing below:
Endorsement code | Description |
T | Double/Triple Trailers (Knowledge test only) |
P | Passenger (Knowledge and Skills Tests) |
N | Tank vehicle (Knowledge test only) |
H | Hazardous materials (Knowledge test only) |
X | Combination of tank vehicle and hazardous materials endorsements (Knowledge test only) |
S | School Bus (Knowledge and Skills Tests) |
In addition, there are restrictions that can be placed on your CDL if you fail to pass certain tests. Below are some of the more common restrictions, though some states may have more:
L |
If the driver does not pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test, does not identify all air brake system components, does not properly conduct an air brake systems check, or does not take the Skills test in a vehicle with a full air brake system, the driver must have an "L" on their license. |
Z | If the driver takes the test in a vehicle with an air over hydraulic brake system, then they will have a "Z" on their license. |
E | If the driver takes the Skills Test in a vehicle that has an automatic transmission, then an "E" is placed on their license. |
O | If the driver takes the Skills Test in a Class A vehicle that has a pintle hook or other non-fifth wheel connection, they will have an "O" on their license, restricting them from driving any Class A vehicle with a fifth wheel. |
M | If a driver possesses a Class A CDL, but obtains his or her passenger or school bus endorsement, "M" restriction indicating that the driver can only operate Class B and C passenger vehicle or school buses is placed on their license. |
N | If a driver possesses a Class B CDL, but obtains his or her passenger or school bus endorsement in a Class C vehicle; the State must place an "N" restriction indicating that the driver can only operate Class C passenger vehicle or school buses. |
V | If the State is notified by the FMCSA that a medical variance has been issued to the driver, the State must indicate the existence of such a medical variance using a restriction code "V" to indicate that there is information about the medical variance on the CDLIS record. |
We aim to connect you with solid CDL tutors who can develop a personalized plan of attack for your CDL test prep. Your instructor can spend time explaining the different CDL classifications to help you identify the types of tests you will need to take, as well as which endorsements you should pursue. CDL courses are centered around your learning style, interests, goals, and other pertinent needs. With the guidance of CDL prep, you can spend as much or as little time as you need preparing for each aspect of getting a CDL.
Your instructor can spend CDL preparation sessions reviewing the air brake system and how to properly check the system. Perhaps you need to review working with manual transmission vehicles or exploring the different components of your CMV. Private CDL tutoring can encompass all aspects or only certain portions of the Skills and Knowledge Tests you will be expected to take, allowing your study sessions to remain focused and efficient. CDL test prep with a private tutor strives to keep you engaged in the material through the use of a variety of teaching tools and strategies.
CDL classes can give you the chance to work with a tutor who understands that no two people learn alike. By teaching to your learning preferences, they can help you remain interested in the information. Building your skills can help you feel confident and prepared on the day of the exam. With custom-tailored CDL prep, you can gain valuable testing and study skills that can help you outside of this test. Quickly recalling information, handling anxiety, and time management are all critical testing and professional abilities that you can work on building with the guidance of your instructor. Thorough CDL test preparation is a unique opportunity to work on abilities that you otherwise may not have focused on.
Don't hesitate to reach out to Varsity Tutors to learn more about the CDL prep services that we can help you connect with. Our academic advisers can help you connect with an instructor who can lead your CDL test prep study sessions with skill and knowledge.
