What content does a Raleigh-Durham GMAT course cover?
You can expect your GMAT course instructor to conduct a comprehensive survey of all material that the four sections of the GMAT tests you on. They can spend time reviewing subjects and concepts in as much depth as you and the other students need. In addition, they can cover strategies and processes that could help you during the test, which we'll discuss below. For now, we can take a brief look at the four sections of the GMAT: the Analytical Writing Assessment, the Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections, and the Integrated Reasoning section.
The Analytical Writing Assessment provides you with a reading passage including an argument. You have to read this piece and evaluate the argument, plan out your response, and then write your clear and concise response. It's important that you quickly organize your thoughts into a few points and develop each of them fully using support from the text and relevant examples. Since you only have 30 minutes to complete the entire process, your Raleigh-Durham GMAT course instructor might assign practice passages as homework. Alternatively, you may work in small groups with your peers on this critical task. When it's scored, the quality of your writing, the thoughts you express, and your command of written English will be assessed.
The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are both taken in a computer-adaptive format. This affects how you study, because in many standardized exams, you're encouraged to skip questions you find difficult and return to answer them later. That's not possible with a computer-adaptive test. Instead, you're presented with one question at a time. Each time you answer correctly or incorrectly, the software chooses a more or less difficult question depending on your answer. There are 36 Verbal Reasoning questions that you have 65 minutes to answer, and 31 Quantitative Reasoning questions that you have 62 minutes to finish.
Verbal Reasoning questions cover reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. To do well on this section, you'll mostly answer questions that follow written passages. You'll need to demonstrate that you understand what words and statements are saying, the logical relationships developed in the piece, and the quality of an argument. You must also be able to draw inferences from the given text and form or assess an action plan based on the arguments made. Sentence correction is just what it says-you're given sentences that contain mistakes and you fix them using your understanding of the English language.
The Quantitative Reasoning questions focus on problem solving and data sufficiency. They require you to use your logical reasoning and analytical skills as you solve problems, choosing the best answer from those provided. To show your understanding of data sufficiency, you will analyze a problem, identify the key data, and note when there's enough information to solve the problem. This section allows you to showcase your math and reasoning skills as well as your general knowledge.
The Integrated Reasoning questions include multi-source reasoning, graphic interpretation, and two-part analysis. Not surprisingly, you need to integrate information given to you in multiple formats such as numerical data, graphic representations, prose text, and tables or charts. You then must discern how the data correlates and combine pertinent data to solve complex problems.

Tutors are more than expert academics; they are motivational coaches. The greatest obstacle preventing a student from learning is lack of belief in their own abilities. There is no knowledge outside the reach of anyone's understanding. ... Patience, understanding, and kindness go a very long way with helping students build their confidence.... Get an understanding for the student’s objective and learning style.... By helping the student believe in themselves, first and foremost. Secondly, by encouraging the student to build up good study habits. Third, by showing the student available resources for future access.
