I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Medieval European History at the Catholic University of America, which means that I am a life-long learner who believes in the power of the humanities. My greatest attributes as a teacher are my patience, empathy, and humor - and of course my memory for random historical facts! I am originally from Columbus, Ohio and moved to Boston in 1999 to attend Boston University. There, I majored in History and English and minored in French, receiving my B.A. in 2003. I went on to receive an M.A. in Medieval History from Catholic University in Washington D.C. in 2007, and my Ph.D. dissertation, which is on religious women in 15th century Italy, is slated for completion in 2014. I currently reside in the New York City area as I finish researching and writing my thesis. I have taught World History (101-102), Medieval Europe and Pre-Modern Historical Seminar at the University level. My most recent teaching position was at Harvard as a teaching fellow for a class called Making the Middle Ages. Doing history well means being a convincing writer, and I have experience helping students at all levels write with both substance and style. In addition to perfecting English language skills for tests or essays, I love sharing knowledge about other languages like French, Latin, and Italian. Since I study a period that can be confusing - in languages other than my own- I am good at figuring out how to present complex material using diverse and engaging methods. Each of us has a different way in which we learn best and no way is better than another! As far as my interests outside of academia, I have a true passion for theatre. My performance experience helps me to be an outgoing and enthusiastic instructor who excels at both strictly organized lectures and more improvisational lessons. I have held numerous positions in arts non-profits in both Boston and D.C., as I love having jobs that support the community and promote creativity. In such customer service positions I have learned to communicate with people from all walks of life in a down-to-earth way. Thus, I have become a great listener, a quick problem-solver, and a better teacher. I look forward to using these skills to to create a unique and challenging tutoring plan centered around your needs.

As a graduate from Towson University, located in the Baltimore, MD area, I am a fully certified educator with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. I have also graduated with a minor in Mathematics and am certified to teach middle school mathematics, including Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. I am currently pursuing a degree in linguistics and eventually hoping to work with English as a Second Language learners. My tutoring experience is generally elementary subjects and middle school/high school mathematics. I have worked privately as an algebra tutor for just over 2 years. Since I am currently a fourth grade classroom teacher, I work with intermediate-aged children daily. I have a significant amount of special needs children in my class, so I am very experienced with working with these children. I am certified to tutor English and grammar, elementary reading, writing, science, and social studies, as well as, elementary math, middle school algebra and geometry, and basic high school algebra. My teaching and tutoring style follows a gradual release system. I normally model the correct response for the student, so they are able to watch me first. Then, I act as a facilitator and allow the student to attempt a similar problem with my guidance. And finally, the student works independently and I provide feedback after they are finished. I believe this builds student confidence and allows them to feel strong doing work in class or without the aide of a tutor. I believe that students learn best when they can explain to someone else exactly what they did and why they are correct. I will normally have my students verbalize what they are doing and summarize what they have done. This allows me to assess whether they have mastered the concept and if I feel comfortable moving on.Outside of work, I enjoy reading, hiking, singing, and dancing. I am currently on a kickball and softball team with my friends, which is very fun. I grew up by the beach, so it is my favorite place to be in the world. Most of my days during the summer are spent outside by the water. Travel is also one of my passions. I love seeing different parts of the world and learning about different cultures.I hope this gives a good view of who I am and what I am all about. I look forward to hearing from prospective students and helping in any way I can. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I have been a Cleveland Metropolitan School District educator for 34 years, teaching grades K-2 in the subjects of English Language Arts (ELA), and mathematics. I believe that children are very eager to learn and they deserve support to help them meet their academic goals. As a retired educator since May, 2021, I continue to equip youngsters with strategies that will effectively assist their understanding of the subject matter being learned. My favorite teaching subject is ELA/ reading instruction with the emphasis on foundational phonics skills. Consequently, reading literacy is critical towards the comprehension of other academic subjects. I have earned a Bachelor of Science degree in ElementaryEducation from Miami University (OH) and a Master's degree in Curriculum Instruction with an Ohio Reading Endorsement Certification from Cleveland State University. During my teaching experience, I had the opportunity to be my school's coordinator of the Ohio Reads funded, H.O.S.T.S. (Help One Student To Succeed) Tutoring/Mentoring Program. My duties involved training community/business volunteers on how to tutor our students in reading and math.and how to mentor the tutored student, thus establishing a healthy and positive relationship together. I have had experience as a Reading Resource Teacher, working with small groups of students to improve their reading development. As a supportive tutor, I am interested in encouraging and building the self esteem of the learner by getting to know the interests, the learning styles. and the social/emotional needs as well. As a Grandmother of a kindergartener and first grader, I remain familiar with the Common Core learning objectives as I assist them during their homework sessions. Family fun is important to me so I spend time with them as often as possible.
