Glendale PCAT Chemistry Tutoring FAQ
For many students on a pre-pharmacy track, undergraduate coursework in chemistry can quickly become second nature. After passing courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry in the pursuit of their degrees, such students may feel prepared to tackle the Chemistry section of the PCAT exam with only minimal preparation. This is a dangerous pitfall, as the format of the PCAT varies dramatically from the exams they likely faced during their previous courses. On the PCAT Chemistry section, students are expected to memorize any necessary equations and complete calculations by hand, presenting a final answer that fits the exam's multiple-choice format. Where undergraduate courses generally offer long-form formats with opportunities for partial credit, the PCAT Chemistry section forces students to focus on accuracy. The wide span of topics covered in this section ranges from fundamental atomic principles to complex organic reaction mechanisms and the intricacies of biochemical polymerization, essentially making it a cumulative exam for the topics covered in undergraduate pre-pharmacy chemistry studies.
To adequately prepare, you must dedicate extensive time to reviewing the equations and principles presented in courses that you may not have taken for several months or years, while also developing your understanding of higher-level content. In trying to address this wealth of content, many students find that an accomplished instructor can offer them the insight to focus on the topics that impact their performance the most. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with PCAT Chemistry tutoring that provides such guidance to those who are beginning their exam preparations. Whether you are more concerned with calculating reaction enthalpy or with determining the product of a hydrolysis reaction, working with a personal instructor can help you build confidence and skill in the areas you find most difficult. When you begin your PCAT Chemistry tutoring sessions, your tutor can collaborate with you to develop a comprehensive series of lesson plans designed around your specific academic and test-taking goals, interests, and weaknesses. By catering to your unique student background and experiences, your tutor can present material in a manner that meshes with your learning style and may be more intuitive than the methods used in classroom environments.
The tailored and focused nature of private tutoring means that you can meet with your instructor in one-on-one sessions and receive his or her full attention. By taking advantage of your tutor's insights, you can build your repertoire of chemistry knowledge, as well as your toolkit of test-taking strategies specifically designed to elucidate questions that you may encounter on the PCAT. These tutors have presented stellar PCAT scores and academic performances, but they have also proven their abilities to communicate complicated concepts effectively.

We began by reviewing a bit of the verbal questions assigned. Following this, time had to be spent on the sections on arithmetic and algebra. (The student had technology problems that delayed her starting of work on these until today.) While there were some foundational issues to be worked through, we did seem to make decent progress. I reassigned these sections as well as a portion of the section on fractions in the prep book. Likewise, I reassigned a portion of the chart interpretation questions. Furthermore, she is to send me an issue essay and to continue working on verbal questions.
The student and I met for another session of GRE tutoring. In this session we focused on how to solve math problems involving averages, two variables, and medians. Once again she picked up the concepts very quickly.
I went over the practice questions that the student had trouble with. Many of these were probability questions as well as some combination and permutation problems. We then discussed the graph/data questions on the test and how to approach these problems. We also discussed distance problems, some algebra questions, and looked at various types of practice questions.
We began the session by reviewing the Algebra problems I had sent him. His confidence increased with the easier straight calculation problems at the beginning. He recalled the rules of exponents, various formulas, as well as methods for simplifying systems of equations. We then moved on to word problems which were more troublesome. We went through how to write the equations slowly. He did better with the percents as opposed to the systems of equations which is to be expected because we have spent more time on percents. He has nonetheless improved, and I believe he will reach his target score of 150 on the math section. For next session, I instructed him to complete the entire practice GRE available for free. It is completely online, so I instructed him to replicate the test conditions as much as possible. He has a week to complete it.
The student and I reviewed two practice problems that gave him trouble before turning to Algebra strategies. We covered plugging in numbers, hidden plug ins, and plugging in the answers. Next time we will finish algebra strategies and begin our substantive review.
