Tutoring review by Andrew in Kissimmee, FL
I helped the student to prepare for his test the next day. We reviewed word problems involving circle circumference calculations in the context of using distance and the number of rotations to travel that distance to calculate the distance traveled in a single rotation/circumference. We reviewed area calculations with geometric shapes. I implored the student to show work, step by step, and use units to better understand what he is attempting to calculate, and to save unit conversions and plugging in the value of pi as the last step. I Indicated that showing work was crucial to a clear understanding of what was being calculated and why, and that this was far more important than attempting to plug in numbers and generate solutions without a firm grasp of the underlying process.

The student and I discussed simplifying square roots using the different square root properties. He was enthusiastic about the material and put forth a good and genuine effort in learning it. I will be sending the student notes on our session today, as well as notes on graphing quadratic equations. He has a quiz tomorrow, and will do very well if he works thoroughly through each of his problems and studies the notes from tonight's session in order to remember all of the properties and small details that we discussed.

During this first session, I spent time getting to know the student and her family. She seemed to be excited to work together on Spanish, and she demonstrated her abilities to count to ten and name some colors. We decided that in future sessions we will spend our time working on colors, numbers, and basic words and phrases.

Today the student had a physics book, so the session went smoothly. We reviewed the conceptual questions on motion. He did well on most of the questions. I have confidence that having a textbook will help him do much better in physics. I will start assigning him readings from the book.

Tutoring review by Sarah in Kissimmee, FL
We spent the lesson working on the student's math (ratios, ordered pairs and plotting points on a graph). He struggled a bit during this lesson and had trouble understanding how to find patterns and solve the problems until I explained the concept several different ways. By the end of the lesson he understood how to solve ratios much better and completed the last few problems without much difficulty.
