If you are looking for additional opportunities to work on your language skills, Varsity Tutors can help by providing you access to Memphis Chinese lessons. Learning a new language can be a rewarding and interesting challenge that requires dedication to practice. Having additional opportunities to work on your language learning can be very beneficial. Whether you are learning Chinese for personal reasons, business-related reasons, or as part of your coursework at a nearby school like White Station High School or Rhodes College, we can find the right lessons for your skill level.
Though Chinese may be considered one of the hardest languages to learn, it is also the most popular language in the world. There are over one billion native speakers of the different dialects of Chinese. The most popular dialect is Mandarin, which happens to be the official language of the People's Republic of China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Fluency in this language could help give you an edge in the business world since international connections continue to become more easily accessible. Aside from the professional benefits, learning another language can allow for a better understanding of new cultures and make it easier to travel to various countries.
Varsity Tutors can get you set up with a private Memphis Chinese tutor or enroll you in an online course. Each offers its own set of unique benefits, and you may even find that a combination of both is the right path for you to reach for your language goals. We can get you started in lessons quickly, with new group courses starting monthly and the ability to be connected with a private instructor in as little as 24 hours. Regardless of whether you have just started with the basics of Chinese at Harding Academy of Memphis or you are looking for more advanced language skills for an undergraduate program at the University of Memphis, we can get you connected with a knowledgeable and patient instructor to help you through the challenges that learning a language can present.
What language skills could be covered during Memphis Chinese lessons?
Chinese can be a complicated language to learn. It is a tonal language, which means the meaning of the word changes according to its tone. There are 4 tones in Mandarin, including flat, rising, falling then rising, and falling. The other Chinese dialects can feature up to 9 different tones. Words in Chinese also only have one grammatical form, which is very different from English where an -s is often added to the end of a word to make it plural. Chinese nouns retain the same form, whether they are plural or singular. Chinese pronouns, verbs, and differentiating verbs can be difficult to learn.
Reading and writing Chinese presents another set of challenges, as it is the only modern pictographic language. This means that there is no Chinese alphabet. Instead, there are over 50,000 characters, and each symbol represents one syllable. Only around 20,000 of these characters are used regularly, and the majority of written Chinese can be communicated using around 2,500 of them. These symbols give no hint at the pronunciation of the word, so each must be learned individually. Confidence in pinyin, which is the system used to translate Chinese characters to letters in the English alphabet based on their pronunciation, will be vital to understanding written Chinese.
Regular exposure to a language is very helpful in retaining the skills needed to become fluent. A lack of practice is the most common barrier to language learning. Memphis Chinese lessons give you a regular opportunity to practice speaking, reading, and writing Chinese. Depending on your proficiency level, your instructor may even choose to teach the entire session in Chinese, as immersion in a new language can be very beneficial for picking up new words in context and in helping you become more comfortable with the language.
How do the different types of Memphis Chinese lessons work?
If you already have a busy schedule filled with school, work, family-life, and extracurricular activities, it can be hard to imagine where you can make room for the time it takes to learn another language. Luckily, Varsity Tutors has different options to fit into any schedule. Whether you are looking to practice your language skills in the evening, over the weekend, or even during your lunch hour, we will be sure to get you set up with the right course or private instructor that can work for you. The convenient online options offered with courses and a Memphis Chinese tutor are excellent if you are looking to avoid an extra commute in your day.
In the interactive classes, you will study with other students and your instructor in a virtual classroom. You will have the ability to participate in conversational practice and activities, all while gaining beneficial feedback from your experienced instructor. If you find yourself needing a little more clarification on a concept, you can request one-on-one time with your instructor. There are new courses starting each month, and they are held at a variety of times.
Working with a Memphis Chinese tutor gives you the opportunity to focus on your goals in individualized sessions. When you study one-on-one with your instructor, you can take as much time as you would like to go over any concepts that you find especially tricky, such as pinyin or practicing your tones. Your instructor could also get to know your strengths and weaknesses and build a custom course plan with your learning styles in mind. With a Memphis Chinese tutor, you can choose to either work online or in person. If you choose the convenience of online lessons, you will meet your instructor on our Live Learning Platform and use video chat and a virtual whiteboard during your study sessions. If you would prefer to meet in person, you can arrange for lessons at your home, a nearby library, or any of your favorite study spots.
