Varsity Tutors is now enrolling new students into our online Kansas City German classes. Are you a student at Park Hill High School, University of Missouri - Kansas City, or a lifelong learner living in the Kansas City, Missouri, metro area? Are you currently learning or considering learning German? If the answer to both those questions is yes, then continue reading to learn more about the online German classes available in your area!
German is spoken by about 90 million people across the globe. It is the official language of Germany and Austria, and is one of three official languages of Switzerland. German is an Indo-European language, just like English, Dutch, and Frisian. By choosing to learn German as a second or third language, you may be better able to enjoy more freedom while traveling in Europe due to the lack of a language barrier. You may also gain an upper hand in conducting international business in the innovative country of Germany. Even if you are not planning on traveling abroad, employers often give extra consideration to candidates who are bilingual. In a Kansas City German course, students may also gain cultural knowledge along with their new language skills.
What does a typical Kansas City German class look like?
All Varsity Tutors' German classes are taught in a state-of-the-art online learning environment led by an expert German teacher. Students can select classes based on their schedule and their German proficiency. The courses will cover reading, writing, speaking, and pronunciation of the German language. Students will participate in class via webcam and microphone. This allows them to see and hear their classmates and instructor, and for the other students and teacher to see the student. There is a collaborative whiteboard where students can practice writing in German and can work on projects together with their classmates. Due to the online nature of our classes, students can choose where they are best able to learn, whether that is in their apartment or home, at a Kansas City Public Library location, or somewhere else they prefer.
The material covered will be catered to the students' current level, but some things that will be covered in the course material are key points to learning German. An English-speaking student may notice that nouns are treated more specifically in German. Not only are all nouns capitalized, but they also change inflection based on the case, gender, and number. Cases are nominative, accusative, genitive, and dative. Genders are feminine, masculine, and neutral. Numbers are singular and plural. Another area that will be covered in a Kansas City German course is verb conjugation. German conjugated verbs are categorized as strong, weak, or mixed. Students will get practice incorporating these and other specialized parts of language into their working knowledge of German.
Students will study common German phrases, learn vocabulary, and practice sentence structure and word pronunciation. Along with these language skills, students will get to see and perform practical applications of the language as they learn about German history and culture. Students may practice reading a Munich transit schedule or placing an order at a cafe for fresh-baked strudel.

I was recruited to Brown University for rowing, and am officially undeclared but plan on graduating with a dual degree in biology and German studies. My favorite subjects to tutor are the ones I'm most passionate about; namely biology, German, and math (algebra and trig). Outside of all that, I enjoy rowing, running, biking, watching films (in English and German), and playing guitar.... I think that making the material fun is the best way for students to engage with it. The more passionate or interested a student is in the material, the more motivated they will be to study it. The more they study it, the better they will do! The best teachers are the ones that make learning fun.
