What concepts could a Chicago SAT course assist me in reviewing?
The SAT contains four sections: Math, Reading Writing and Language, and the optional Essay section. Taking a maximum time of three hours, plus 50 minutes if you decide to take the optional Essay section, the SAT consists mainly of multiple-choice questions. Scores are based on the number of correct answers, and each section also receives a separate sub-score to provide insight into a student's individual strengths. You will need to know a wide array of skills, so seeking out the wisdom you can find in a Chicago SAT course is a great idea. Let's have a look at each individual section.
The Math section allows you 80 minutes to complete 58 questions. It is important to note that this is a two-part section. One section allows the use of a calculator and the other does not. The no calculator section contains 15 multiple-choice questions and 5 grid-ins, while the calculator section has 30 multiple-choice questions and 8 grid-ins. Some parts include several questions about one single scenario. The Math section covers content areas including algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math. These content areas are tailored to assess skills such as fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
Then there is a 52-question Reading section. In this section, you will have a total of 65 minutes to showcase the following skills: command of evidence, words in context, and analysis in history, social studies, and science. These skills will be tested through the reading of various selections, the first being a passage from contemporary or classic U.S. or world literature. The next portion will involve reading one or a pair of passages from one of the U.S. founding documents or another passage from the Great Global Conversation documents. Additionally, a social science selection related to sociology, psychology, economics, or related areas will also be featured on the test. Finally, you will read two to three science passages examining developments and foundational concepts in physics, chemistry, biology, or Earth science.
Next, you will take the Writing and Language section. This section allows you 35 minutes to complete 44 multiple-choice questions, which all are based around provided written passages that may include tables, graphs, and charts. No math is required for this section, and prior knowledge of the information contained in the passages is not a part of this test. In terms of scorings, the Writing and Language section is combined with the Reading test for one-half of your composite SAT score. The skills assessed in this section include words in context, analysis of written passages, clarity of expression in ideas, and standard English conventions.
Lastly, there is an optional SAT Essay section. The Essay allows you 50 minutes to answer one question in which you read a passage and consider the author's use of evidence, reasoning in developing ideas and connecting the claims and evidence, and stylistic and persuasive elements. The purpose of this section is to write an essay evaluating the author's argument and persuasive abilities, which will assess your reading, analysis, and writing skills. The essay you write should not explain whether you agree with the author, but assess the author's argument.
Some additional things to know about taking the SAT include the times you'll be allowed to enter and leave the testing site. You will start by 8:00 am and be released at either 12 pm or 1 pm, depending on whether you decide to take the optional Essay section. Throughout the test, you will also be allowed one 10-minute break and one five-minute break. Lastly, it is important to remember the fact that there is no penalty for guessing, so it is always in your best interest to answer every question in each section.
