I've really enjoyed my experience with VT. I was feeling very discouraged about taking the GRE again and I wanted to try and boost my score. I think learning from a person is so much better than a book! I feel so much more prepared and I've been telling people about it as well!

We found VT to be incredibly well qualified and were able to get 2 different people for the type of studying my son needed for his GRE studies. They were able to tailor the teaching structure one on one to his needs. He had excellent results, and has since been accepted to grad school.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is used by many colleges and universities as part of the graduate admissions process. The GRE takes approximately three and a half hours to complete. The GRE consists of four sections, including the verbal reasoning section, the quantitative reasoning section, experimental or research section, and the analytical writing section.

Verbal reasoning is separated into two sections. The first section covers vocabulary usage, critical reasoning, and reading comprehension. The second section includes critical reading, sentence equivalence, and text completion. The quantitative section is also broken down into two sections. The first section focuses on reasoning and high school level math. The second section consists of data interpretation, problem solving, and quantitative comparisons.

The experimental or research section can be either verbal or quantitative and does not count towards your total score. The analytical writing section is divided into an issue task and an argument task. The issue task requires you to write about a topic for half an hour. The argument task requires you to critique an argument.

Preparing for the GRE can be difficult because it involves being proficient in many different subject areas. If you want to try to make sure that you are as prepared for the GRE as possible, you should connect with a private tutor. For the quantitative section we worked on algebra and geometry; for the verbal, sentence completion and equivalence. We also worked to analyze the argument essays.

GRE Tutoring review by Gabrielle in North Bay, CA
We began the session by discussing the student's goals and familiarity with the GRE. He's planning to apply to PhD programs in rhetoric and composition in the fall, and he's taking the GRE on May 29. He'd like to get at least a 150 score on the verbal section and a 4 or 4.5 on the analytical writing (essay) section. Because he's still waiting to hear back if his schools will even consider his quantitative (math) scores, we're going to focus just on the essay and verbal sections for now. I recommended he purchase the test prep book. Because he didn't have any prior knowledge of the test, I spent some time discussing its format and general test-taking strategies in detail. We then went through some practice Text Completion and Reading Comprehension questions on the website. He has a solid foundation for vocabulary, but he'd still like to improve and we'll need to increase his speed, so I recommended spending 15-20 minutes a day with a vocab-building game. He'll also need to improve his reading speed, so I gave him links to more reading comprehension problems to spend about 15-20 minutes a day practicing reading comprehension sections online. His final piece of homework will be to type an essay in 30 minutes using the following prompt and email it to me by Monday: "Some people protest the destruction of famous old buildings, saying that we are losing priceless cultural and historical landmarks. Others suggest that by replacing them, however, we are doing exactly what the builders of the originals did. In time, the new buildings themselves may be considered landmarks. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented."ù It was a pleasure working with this student tonight, and I'm looking forward to seeing him improve over the next two months!

GRE Tutoring review by Dylan in North Bay, CA
Today, we did a large review of mathematics. We covered a wide array of topics to see how the student has retained much of what we have gone over. The student was able to answer most of the questions, but he needs more practice so that he can do this quicker. Next session, we will focus on the verbal section, particularly reading comprehension.
