We worked on factoring, synthetic and long division, and other concepts that the student needed help with. She seems to be getting a lot of confidence in herself and the material, and I've been able to clarify many of her questions. I encouraged her to keep practicing the concepts to make sure she retains all that she's learned.

Tutoring review by Ted in Cotati, CA
We had a very productive session today. For the past few sessions, we mainly focused on the math section. Therefore, we took the majority of today's session to go over the writing and reading sections. The writing section has a very simple way of achieving a score of 600 to 650 minimum. The strategy is to actively go over the main errors that may occur. Once the 10 or so main issues that can arise are memorized, it becomes a routine to answer those questions without much difficulty. The student was able to understand and follow the strategies for the writing section. Although he got most of the questions wrong, the good news was that those questions were finished a while back. Today, he was able to understand why he got most of those old questions incorrect. With some practice over the next few weeks, he should be able to dramatically bring up his writing score.

Tutoring review by Aaron in Cotati, CA
We started class with the student working on her homework packet. She had no issues with setting up the problem or solving it, just with minor mistakes and errors in multiplication. We moved on to other sections of her packet. She didn't understand what she was supposed to do regarding mathematical expressions with multiple operations. She hadn't been taught the order of operations, so we went over it only briefly, just enough to touch on what she needed to understand that how operations are configured within an expression drastically changes the output. At the end of class, we checked some of the material she had previously completed herself. There were a lot of errors in translating written expressions into numerical expressions. She got it by the end of class, but she'll need more practice and reinforcement to ensure retention.

Today the student and I finished the practice test we have been working on the past few sessions. She is slowly gaining confidence in solving the problems but still needs help in solving more difficult problems. Once she is told what to do with the numbers, she is able to solve the problems.

We spent the first few minutes of class organizing the student's planner then finished a review packet for her upcoming exam. The review went well. She said there was a pop quiz that morning with proofs that she felt very confident in. I'm very happy with her improvements so far. One thing she sincerely needs to work on is use of the calculator.

In this session, we went over photosynthesis and light independent and dependent reactions. Going systematically through the worksheets given to the student, we clarified any areas that she did not fully understand. Once we were going through it, she was easily able to grasp the concepts and caught on quite well to the material. This will be helpful for the quiz on Thursday as well.
