Bradenton GATE/ TAG Tutoring FAQ
During early education, one of the most important environmental factors that can help lead a child to later academic success is finding the proper level of introductory difficulty, pace, and stimulation. Different students will have different natural aptitudes: some will prefer reading exercises while others prefer math, and some will prefer visual data representations while others prefer to hear a teacher read aloud from a book. Identifying your student's learning preferences and tendencies can be an incredibly meaningful step toward making his or her educational experience as engaging and effective as possible. Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs, also referred to as Talented and Gifted (TAG) programs, are provided in some school systems as an opportunity to present different curricula and challenges to those students who demonstrate advanced aptitudes from an early age. Admittance into these programs can be determined with any one of a variety of elementary standardized tests, such as the CogAT, OLSAT, or NNAT, though many others may be offered, depending on your geographic location.
The quicker pace and increased difficulty of material presented is designed to keep students fascinated with academic concepts, where they may have become bored or disinterested in a class moving at a slower rate. If your child has been accepted into a GATE or TAG program, then there can be no doubt about the advanced nature of his or her cognition. Even so, the different ways that different subjects may appeal to your student may cause him or her to excel in one area, but struggle in another. Such discrepancies can be highlighted in a GATE or TAG curriculum, causing frustration that can lead to academic aversions and future difficulties simply based on this negative experience. If your child has demonstrated exceptional academic ability, but still struggles to completely master some of the concepts presented in his or her coursework, consider enlisting the help of an instructor. GATE/ TAG tutoring programs are designed to keep your student challenged in the areas in which he or she excels, while building foundations and strengthening conceptual understanding in those areas in which your child has difficulty. Private GATE/ TAG tutoring can provide a personalized environment, allowing your child to receive one-on-one instruction.
This individual attention removes the distractions and variables of a classroom education, allowing your child's tutor to focus exclusively on his or her needs. Your tutor can craft a targeted learning plan, specific to your child's interests, strengths, weaknesses, and learning style, allowing lessons to proceed in as effective and efficient a way as possible. With GATE/ TAG tutoring, your child can receive the advanced instruction and academic challenges that he or she craves, while gaining the crucial review and supplemental education that he or she needs to achieve well-rounded academic success. Even in GATE and TAG courses, the topics being taught are the mere fundamentals upon which future courses in high school and college will build.
Excelling in one area simply isn't enough it is critical to your child's future success that he or she master skills in all subjects covered in his or her GATE or TAG program. Varsity Tutors will work with you to connect you to a GATE/ TAG tutor who will be able to help your child succeed in advanced instruction. Tutors are available to meet in person or even face-to-face online. You get to choose the location, time, and frequency of your tutoring sessions. Everything is built around your wants and needs. Recent Bradenton GATE/ TAG Tutoring Session Notes
During this session, I worked with the student on the reading and science sections of the ACT. I had the student read a passage and timed her reading speed (180 wpm), and compared it to the average reading speed (250 WPM). I discussed with her reading strategies and determined that she had difficulty with the reading section because she would always return to the passage after every question. We worked on her reading passages and answering questions without always referring back to the text.
I also worked with the student on the Data Representation portion of the science section. I worked with her on questions and showed her how to approach these questions.

The student and I worked extensively on the math section of his ACT today. I noticed he was a little frustrated with not being able to recall processes for certain types of problems, so I tried to slow things down and review concepts as much as test-taking strategies. Next week we will focus mostly on seeing where his conceptual difficulties lie. We also did some work in the science section, which he seemed to improve on. I advised the student to practice reading more technical writing to prepare him for the science section. In English he also did very well, although we spent much less time in this section.. He had no major conceptual problems in that section today.
Today we talked about test-taking strategies and went through Practice Test 1: Section 1, and we completed part of Section 2. The student did very well. She understands the material but she sometimes gets overwhelmed by what the question is asking for. She gets a little lost when the question is particularly wordy, but once we break down the question, she is able to solve the problem independently. We discussed that practice problems are probably the best tool for her right now so that she can become more familiar with how the SAT phrases questions.
The student and I discussed her previous scores. She had done very well overall, and she had missed the most questions in critical reading. I took a more detailed approach with her this time, asking her to carefully reword the question and to come up with her own answer, in addition to categorizing questions and looking for key words. She did very well.
This was my first session with the student. After getting to know each other a bit we started right into a few practice tests so I could get a feel for his strengths and weaknesses. He has strong reading comprehension capabilities, and after a little direction and strategy he had little trouble with the science questions we went over.
