I'm a New York City middle school English teacher and have been teaching in the private school system in the city for almost a decade now. Over the years I've worked with all grade levels in many subjects areas involving the humanities, English, Social Studies, French, high school and college admissions prep, and many other academic topics. I truly love teaching students in a range of ways and over the last few years it's become very important to be able to effectively engage students through virtual learning. I am a graduate of Georgia College and State University (BA in Sociology with Minors in Spanish and International Studies) and Arizona State University (MA in Special Education with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis). I am bilingual in Spanish and English and have enjoyed living abroad in Paraguay, South America and helping others reach their potential in learning a new language. As a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, I am also passionate about tutoring students with learning barriers so that they are able to receive individualized supports to best achieve their goals.

Ever since I was asked by my 5th grade teacher to help other students in the classroom with their work I have enjoyed finding ways to increase understanding. Experiencing the "light bulb" moment with a student keeps the passion for teaching alive in my heart, and seeing students go on to succeed where they once struggled is amazing. My education and degree are in Special Education and Psychology, and my career has been spent building individualized program plans and objectives for students that meet their needs and are built on their strengths and interests. I believe that every student can learn given appropriate, high -interest teaching methods and materials delivered by a competent teacher who they trust. Students need to feel successful in order to engage in optimal learning experiences, so rapport building is key in working with children. In order to foster that feeling of early success, I use the explicit instruction model of I Do-We Do-You Do. I also borrow from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) by using errorless teaching when introducing something new. to a student in order to keep them from making mistakes and having a negative experience. Love of life-long learning for students is built upon feeling good about their abilities and having rewarding school experiences.

I earned both my undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders and my Master's degree in Special Education at the University of Connecticut. Go Huskies! I have been a special education teacher in Connecticut public schools for the last 8 years and really enjoy working at the elementary school level. I like to teach elementary writing and elementary math, but have a greater interest and specialty in the area of elementary reading. I am a Fund for Teachers Fellow and spent my grant on a week-long training learning how to teach reading in a multi-sensory way through Orton-Gillingham. As a special education teacher, I work with students in small groups or one-on-one setting. I like the smaller groups because I can get to know the students better on both an academic as well as personal level. I'm better able to plan my instruction based on what I see as their strengths and areas of growth. My students feel safe working with me and taking risks they may not take in their general classrooms. My calm, patient manner helps students feel comfortable asking questions and trying new things with their academics.When I am not working as a special education teacher, I get outside and enjoy the New England weather. I like going for hikes, bike rides and, running 5ks. In the summer I am always by the water, going paddle boarding or kayaking. During quarantine, I learned how to crochet. I like making blankets and clothes for friends and family.

I have acquired over a decade's worth of teaching experience. that have reached as far away as Shanghai, China, where I lived for 3 years. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught Spanish to lower and upper elementary students at several Ann Arbor Public Schools and Kindergarten institutions in the Southeast Michigan area. In addition, I worked as a Substitute Teacher to K-8 students at St. Francis Catholic School in Ann Arbor, South Arbor Academy in Ypsilanti and as a Special Education Substitute Teacher for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD). I had the opportunity to work at Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences (DAAS) as a 5th Grade Teacher to inner-city students for the 2007-2008 school year where I also initiated and implemented a Spanish after school program. My prior employment experiences not only afforded independent work opportunities, but also effective communication and interaction with people of diverse cultural backgrounds and affiliations, which includes co-workers, colleagues, and community leaders. I am a results-oriented individual with a strong administrative and organizational background, along with quality problem-solving and decision-making abilities and skills. Since I began tutoring 8 years at the beginning of high school, I had not realized that a job that I had initially taken to help pay for the luxuries that my parents could not afford would become one of the brightest and meaningful opportunities I would ever be a part of. At Kumon, I worked with hundreds of students who were challenged with mastering the subjects they were expected to learn and challenged with material they were yet to know; it was both difficult and satisfying to see students struggling with a subject develop over time. Most of the jobs I have worked since then have allowed me to watch kids from elementary to high school grow over the course of years, and I have done my best to make sure they develop a capacity and enjoyment of learning. Even as a graduate of chemistry, I continue to tutor because it is one of, if not the most, impactful way to positively affect the younger generation, and I am glad to be a part of their growth,

She serves as liaison between the college and surrounding public and private K-12 schools, and oversees teacher certification in the accredited program. Before devoting her work to higher education, Jennifer enjoyed twenty-eight years as a teacher, specialist, principal, and director in Pennsylvania school districts.Jennifer holds degrees in education and curriculum and instruction. Her extensive post-graduate work is focused on special education, reading, instructional coaching, and educational leadership.Jennifer is laser focused on the notion that all students can learn and succeed with high expectations and scaffolded levels of support. To this end, she creates educational spaces that foster positive climate, support learners, and celebrate individual strengths.

The first degree is in Literacy Studies, where I learned how to help strugglers and emergent bilinguals become better readers. My second degree is in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. I have spent the last three decades helping people learn how to do various things--from water safety instruction and playing the piano--from phases of matter to Shakespeare! I am a well rounded scholar and I am a life-long learner. I hope to start a PhD in Literacy Studies in 2023.I believe that every person CAN and WILL learn. I also believe that learning can be fun. This was a challenge during the pandemic, but my students and I succeeded in creating a collegial atmosphere of engaged learners.
