What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

I'm very grateful to have found VT. They made the difference between a pass and fail grade for my son. English was one of his most challenging classes and with Varsity Tutors he passed the course. I'm forever grateful.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Matthew in Miramar, FL
During this session, the student and I predominantly practiced reading, through the use of children's books available in the library (and according to the student's selections). We finished up the lesson with some letter-writing exercises in order for me to assess the student's progress with the letters that have given him trouble in the past. He was extremely cooperative during this session, and went along with my plans the entire hour. He also demonstrated a lot of proficiency with the materials we covered, both reading and writing - he actually read an entire children's book with only minimal help from me. In terms of his writing abilities, I continue to see improvements, although consistency occasionally remains a problem - I will continue to emphasize practicing his most challenging letters in future sessions to ensure that he gets those down too, but he did show me that his writing has improved markedly on several letters. As always, he has his writing workbooks to help him between our sessions. I counted this session as a "win," simply because the student has been so cooperative with me and has been doing notably better in terms of both word comprehension/recognition and writing.

English Tutoring review by Katharine in Miramar, FL
Today we really focused most of our time on reading and reading comprehension. Since it was the beginning of the week, we spent a little time reviewing the student's new weekly vocal exercise, making sure she understands the correct meaning and pronunciation for each word. We also chose the 7 vocab words the student will use in her story-writing assignment later in the week, and talked about ideas she can use in her story so that she'll be able to write it easily on her own. Then, we spent the bulk of our session on 2 reading passages: one was a long passage just above the student's reading level, with a series of 10 comprehension questions that followed. At first the student seemed a little daunted by the length, but we broke it down into manageable pieces and she breezed through both the reading and the questions. Based on her answers, I think inference skills will be the next thing to work on. She is very good at remembering information and scanning a passage for facts, so the next thing will be working to have her make bigger connections and infer information not directly stated in the text. For our second reading exercise, we looked at the beginning of a very high-level folktale. I encouraged the student to read for the main idea and overall meaning, without worrying about understanding each and every word, or guessing unknown word meanings from context clues. She worked hard on this more difficult passage, which we'll finish up next week.

English Tutoring review by Daniel in Miramar, FL
We went over essay to be handed in on Monday regarding bullying. We developed a structure for the essay and worked through ways to make the argument, finding appropriate research to use. The student needed a little bit of help structuring each paragraph, but eventually came to a good conclusion and developed a strong outline for the essay in general. This is the student's first big assignment for the year, and I will follow up with her on Thursday to see progress.

English Tutoring review by Stephen in Miramar, FL
The student and I started by getting to know each other, then we got started. We spent the first 30 minutes working together on her Spanish work. She practiced adjectives and objects with nouns. We then started revising an essay she is working on. I had her tighten up her thesis and topic sentences. I told her these sentences should be as direct as possible and should say what her opinion is going to be, but not defend it yet. We also worked on transition sentences to link the main idea of her new paragraph back to the thesis statement. We finally put together some evidence and commentary on her second body paragraph. She should be careful not to include quotes that don't directly add to the point she is trying to make in that paragraph. She still needs to complete this paragraph and her conclusion to finish this essay.

English Tutoring review by Jasen in Miramar, FL
We mainly focused on the student's vocabulary assignments, working specifically on the thought processes needed to successfully understand analogies. We also reinforced the fundamental skill of encoding vocabulary words quickly into long-term memory. He is making progress in this technique, which will be a life-long learning tool. He was able to recall words he had learned from the previous chapter, showing the effectiveness of this tool. Additionally, about halfway through the session he and his mother raised a concern that he has project milestone deadlines for his Research in Science class with which he has fallen behind. Fortunately, we were quickly able to first delineate what makes for a research study that is feasible in terms of time, budget, and knowledge. We also discussed that his classmates would be the ideal, most accessible participant pool as well as the target "benefit group" for which his research findings would be most applicable. After discussion on some of the main problems facing teens, we brainstormed ways in which we could generate certain research questions, and then finally which of those questions would be most feasible for a year-long project according to the aforementioned criteria. This process created the framework for him to focus his wide-ranging thoughts, which appeared to be paralyzing him previously. Once focused, he was able to enthusiastically generate the idea of testing teen cognitive performance as a function of variable sound stimuli, ranging from music to white noise. This is a project both feasible and potentially very useful for his classmates and teens in general. As always, the student is a bright learner whose enthusiasm makes him a pleasure to work with.
