How can a Elementary Math tutor help you?

Math is a field that requires knowledge from different subcategories to be stacked upon one another as students go farther into their studies. In other words, you have to know how to add and subtract before you may move onto adding and subtracting with fractions. One of the subcategories that all of this knowledge stacking starts with is elementary math, which asks students to consider things like multiplication, volume, graphs, and other basic concepts. However, even the basics may be challenging for some students. That's completely normal. However, it might be worth it to have your student work with a tutor if you see that they need some extra help. Luckily, the educational directors at Varsity Tutors are skilled at helping students in Salt Lake City, UT, connect with elementary math tutors.

When your child works with a tutor, they'll be working a quiet, distraction-free environment, where they may really focus on their lessons. This may be a nice change of pace from the typical classroom experience, which is full of friends and other stimuli that compete for your child's attention. Also, their tutor may develop a customized lesson plan that places their needs at the focus of their studies. Through that, and the one-on-one nature of working with a private tutor, you may expect your child's study sessions to become much more efficient. To help your child try to get ahead in their elementary math course, we may find them an expert tutor in Salt Lake City today.

Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Jessica in Salt Lake City, UT
The student and I worked quite extensively with clocks during our session. I brought a clock so that she could have some hands-on experience with using it. We worked on telling time to the five minutes. She seemed to do really well with understanding these concepts, and we will try telling time to the minute in the next few sessions. We also worked on adding and I am seeing some great progress with her strategies in solving more difficult addition problems.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Chelsea in Salt Lake City, UT
Today started with a big win! When I left last Thursday, I left the student with a book I had brought for her. I asked her to read on Monday night and fill out her reading log that she has, and I could see it on Tuesday. When I got to her house she was smiling from ear to ear and was so excited to show me that she had not only read for Monday, but had also read for Tuesday. She had also done her reading log. I told her how proud I was of her and how amazing that was! She told me that she was so happy that I was proud of her! After talking about her reading we worked on a project that she has in social studies. She is supposed to pick an office that she would want to run for (ex. mayor, president, etc.). She chose mayor. We did her whole planning packet. Lastly, we worked on finishing a story that we had started a couple of weeks ago. That did not take very long. We then talked about how multiplication is just repeated addition. She is getting better at working with 4's, but 3's and 6's still require work. We finished with a little bit of rounding review.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Karra in Salt Lake City, UT
Student C: We worked on her spelling/ comprehension words and her math. For her math homework, she did addition and subtraction of 6 digit numbers. She did well with that concept. For her spelling, we looked up 10 words in the dictionary and she recorded the definitions. I asked her questions about the words and also presented her with a variety of samples of the words used in sentences. She is very focused and did a great job! Student A: We began with math. She did better today with her decimals. She seems to really be grasping the concept. She had a visual aid that her teacher provided that seemed to really help her understand comparisons of decimals better. We spent the majority of the session on her math to ensure that she was comprehending the content. Afterwards, she worked on her word study homework. I encouraged her to look up words she wasn't too sure about and then I helped her use the words in sentences. She's an amazing writer! Student D: For math, we worked on measuring and estimating measurements. He did well with that concept. He shows emerging skills in the area of fractions; he is eager to use fractions and is learning what they represent. He also completed his practice spelling test. I reminded him at the beginning to focus on beginning sounds, which wasn't a problem this time. Interestingly enough, he seemed to struggle with digraphs (gh as "f" sound as well as wr as "r" sound). I will check in with him tomorrow regarding his spelling words.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Richard in Salt Lake City, UT
When I arrived the student was ready to begin our session. As usual, she had begun working on her homework due on Wednesday. She had completed one problem as part of the Plant Science homework. In the remaining problems, we focused on using number lines with whole numbers and decimals to answer specific questions relative to plant growth over a period of weeks by 4 different students. She moved deliberately and slowly from one problem to the next. By the conclusion of today's session, she had completed 7 more problems, finishing this homework assignment. In our interactions, we discussed and employed addition and subtraction operations to problem solve. These included use of a number line and a graph. Additionally, she displayed her creativity when she constructed 2 original problems using the number line and graphing strategies. It was a very productive hour.

This session was focused on helping the student understand the prime factorization method of finding square roots and cube roots, and understanding exponents more in general. We had a good time and he now has a much better understanding of this method.
