Today was our first session. The student is writing an English research paper and needs help summarizing the information from the sources he is using. He brought the work he had done so far, and I helped him paraphrase the text he read.

The student and I worked on her writing assignment together, which was a one paragraph summary of an experience and what it taught her. We decided to do the Joan of Arc book first and try to get through as much of it as possible before we do the Iliad over the summer.

The student and I had a great first session. I reviewed one of the reports. While I was reading another report, I had him go through a different draft and see if he could apply what we had just talked about. He did a great job of applying the information we had talked about. We were able to go through all five rough drafts. We made a schedule for when he will write his polished drafts on the five reports we worked on and then write the next five rough drafts. We will then review those 5 reports on Wednesday next week so he can have all 10 reports polished and ready to turn in on Friday.

College Essays Tutoring review by Amanda in Newton, MA
As planned from last week, the student took the writing diagnostic PSAT test. The beginning of our session was devoted to looking at the results of his test and evaluating his strengths and weaknesses. The student scored the best on the punctuation section of the test. His overall score was also in the lower 80's, which demonstrates great competency! The student's lowest score of subcategory was for improving phrase, clause, and sentence errors. This was not a surprise, as I have noticed that the student struggles with ensuring his sentences are not run-ons or contain too many dangling dependent clauses. After working through the questions the student got incorrect on the test, we spoke about the list of grammatical practices I would like to prepare for next week, in order to aid him in improving this aspect of his writing. The student agreed that a lesson in linguistics would be beneficial and interesting for him to help him increase his background knowledge of the language and therefore allow him to continually improve his vocabulary. Working through examples, the student was quickly able to brainstorm words that could possibly fit each given prefix, suffix, and root. This is direct evidence of the student's already vast collection of words and knowledge of the language's commands. It was very fun to brainstorm words and logically deduce and work through these examples together. I very much enjoyed to see him utilize a great skill to accomplish something seemingly challenging. At the end of the session, the student and I began to work through a grammar workbook regarding run-on sentences. His ability to identify the errors in the sentences and think about how to correct them was really phenomenal. In the coming sessions, we will work to improve those highlighted areas of difficulty on the PSAT and also more robust essay practice.

We discussed the student's book report on Jean Toomer. We worked on sentence structure, fleshing out her ideas, and vocabulary development. Once we got rolling, she really got into it. I left her with a few tricks for proof-reading her work.

This was a get acquainted session with the student. We looked at some of his older materials, and some essays that he wrote for the common app. He is an excellent writer and I'm confident that we can put together some persuasive essays. One following the prompt about his favorite word was downright beautiful. He's going to write up one of the essays that is similar between several universities and go from there.
