If you are a high school student preparing for college, Varsity Tutors can connect you with reliable and quality Chicago SAT prep options. Whether you have a year or two to go before you'll step foot on a college campus, developing a proactive plan towards the college application process could put you ahead of the pack. Before you put a pen to those applications, you'll first have to take one of the widely accepted college admission assessments like the SAT. Most students in Chicago, such as those at Walter Payton College Prep have opted to take the SAT as their exam of choice. Colleges like the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools rely on standardized assessments like the SAT to determine a student's readiness for college-level coursework.
The SAT is a comprehensive entrance assessment that is used by college and universities to make important decisions regarding the admission of prospective students. This assessment is made up of three main sections, which include Math, Reading, and Writing & Language. There is also an optional essay writing portion that allows students to demonstrate their writing abilities. No matter what stage of SAT prep you are in, Varsity Tutors can set you up with a Chicago SAT tutor or a prep class. Both options can help get you ready for exam day.
What Does Chicago SAT Prep Cover?
The SAT is a globally recognized assessment that allows students to demonstrate to colleges what exactly they know and how well they can apply the knowledge that they have. Each section of the SAT will measure a student's comprehension of a specific subject. College admission committees take into consideration the overall SAT score when making they review your application. Both the Math section and the Reading section combined with the Writing and Language section are awarded between 200-800 points. Let's take an in-depth look at the overall structure of the SAT.
In the Math section of the SAT, the test taker will have approximately 80 minutes to answer 80 questions. This section consists of two tests. During the first 25 minutes of the exam, you won't be able to use a calculator. In the last part of the Math section, you'll have 55 minutes and you'll be allowed to use a calculator. Some of the main content areas in the Math section include algebra and problem-solving.
The Reading section takes about 65 minutes to complete, and test takers can expect to complete a total of 52 multiple choice questions. The questions are based on writing passages that you'll have to read and analyze. The Reading section focuses on comprehension and it assesses a candidate's ability to understand vocabulary context.
You'll find that the Language and Writing section places emphasis on how language functions within a variety of contexts. All of the questions are passage-based, and you'll be asked to improve the style and flow of content. In addition, test takers will be required to correct grammatical verbiage and identify stylistic errors within a passage.
The Essay section of the SAT is completely optional. Students who choose to take this portion of the exam will have to read a passage and compose a written response. The main purpose of the essay is to demonstrate your skills in written English and how well you can analyze the argument presented.
