Today we started by going over the student's homework. His sentences using adjectives were well-written. Then we went over days of the week, months, and reviewed all the verbs that take 'etre' in the passe compose. I gave him a quick quiz on the basic verbs that he learned in his first French class, and he did very well. Every meeting I am going to give him a verb quiz on five new verbs. I require a correct spelling of each conjugation as well as the past participle and the designation of avoir or etre in the passe compose. I wrote out the groups of verbs that I am going to use in the series of quizzes in case he wants to work ahead. Then I gave him a quiz on the 20 most basic adjectives. He needs to study those more, and I am going to quiz him on them again next time. His homework is to study his 5 new verbs, study the 20 adjectives, and write a dialog between himself and someone he knows using all the vocabulary and phrases that we have gone over already. The dialog needs to contain 10 lines for each person, with a total of 20 lines. He needs to include: greetings, introductions, telling time, campus nouns, adjectives, and asking age and/nationality.

Today our objectives were: practice conjugating regular -er verbs and practice alphabet and numbers. During the session, we reviewed some homework questions surrounding conjugation in context and used cognates (words that are similar in French and English) to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words. I encouraged the student to be on the lookout for cognates for use in expanding his vocabulary. After going over the questions at hand, I shared a handout with the student that includes the regular conjugation of verbs as well as the conjugation of irregular verbs such as etre and avoir. The student will use this to study conjugation of -er, etre, and avoir for next week. We also reviewed the alphabet, and the student demonstrated knowledge of about 20/26 letters in French. We continued to practice by spelling familiar words, such as his name, mom, and dad. This was followed by a dictation exercise in which I spoke only French to the student (immersion practice), and he wrote down French words as I spelled them in French. He struggled a little with a few letters (common challenges such as e, c, a, o), and we reviewed those further. Finally, we went over the liaison, the blending together of ending sounds from the pronoun with the beginning sound of a conjugated verb that begins with a vowel (i.e., j'aime instead of je aime). The student will complete the practice pages in his French study guide that correspond to this objective.

In this session, the student and I covered introductory fingerspelling and basic vocabulary related to family, introductions, colors, and numbers. She has been doing great work in her independent practice, which will give us a lot to build on. I'm happy that she seems to enjoy American Sign Language, and I look forward to helping her build toward fluency in the language.

We went over introductory greetings and the alphabet. Given it was his first time, he had trouble remembering things (we went over a lot of information for our first class, but I think he could handle it). He'll work on the details of what we went over before we see each other and we'll review information that I'm sending him soon, as well as a sample conversation to practice with his girlfriend.
