ACT Math Tutoring review by Taylor in Pasadena, TX
Today we did reading practice. I pushed the student very hard with difficult questions, because he can handle it and the more practice, the better. He has a natural knack for the reading section as well, even if he does not feel like it. We are meeting on Wednesday again, so I gave him a science and a reading diagnostic test to take before then so he can continue practicing and we can see where he is with the skills he needs.

Today we did some timed practice tests in English and Math. The pacing was good, and I want to stress that the student should shoot for a target number of questions. It is ideal to answer every question, but it's also important to give thoughtful answers. These are the number of correct responses needed to score a 20: English: 44-46 Math: 30 Reading: 22 Science: 21-22 Keep these in mind as you take the test (try to answer more than this number!!!) You are going to do great tomorrow! If you would like to continue sessions this year please contact me. It was nice working with you.

Today we discussed all of the problems the student missed on the practice test. It turns out that not all of those missed answers were easy for him to correct. I think every Thursday, his homework will be an entire practice test plus vocabulary, reading, etc. Every Tuesday he will correct his homework. His homework this weekend is practice test 3.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Chelain in Pasadena, TX
Today we discussed the student's goals for our tutoring sessions and what scores he would like to achieve on the ACT. Today we worked on English and math problems. In English, we discussed active and passive voice, common errors using commas, common errors using semicolons, and prepositions. In math, we discussed how to calculate angles in polygrams, how to calculate the area of complex shapes, and how to calculate sums of a series of numbers. We went over problems that he had answered incorrectly on previous practice tests he had taken. For our next session, he agreed to take the English and science sections of a practice test he has, and we will go over the problems he missed and cover topics as necessary, to help make sure he comprehensively understands the topics that are being tested.

Today we dove right back into practice math problems. Because this is the first time seeing some of the materials, I am taking a slower approach and solving each problem in-depth. Both students are learning well, I feel as though they understand the topics well after review. I instructed each of them to download the online learning platform app to study the topics we cover and those they haven't yet mastered.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Jake in Pasadena, TX
Today we finished going over the ACT English "Identifying Grammatical Errors" section. This included a discussion of parallel structure errors and sentence combination errors. After that we did a couple of practice sections from the ACT test. The student got 100% on the first passage, but the second passage was a little bit more tricky. Part of the reason this passage was trickier was that it tested a skill called "editing decisions" that we are going to go over on Monday. Great job today!
