Hialeah ACCUPLACER WritePlacer Tutoring FAQ
No matter which classes you take in college, your writing skills will be put to the test. To provide students with the best writing education possible, many colleges place significant emphasis on sorting incoming freshmen into appropriately challenging writing classes that neither bore nor overwhelm them. Many schools use the ACCUPLACER WritePlacer assessment as a guide in making these choices. This section of the exam may seem underwhelming at first glance, as it only asks you to write a relatively short response to a single provided prompt. However, consider the impact that this single piece of prose can have on the trajectory of your college education: if you do not demonstrate your writing abilities to the fullest, you may be placed in a class that teaches content you have already mastered, that bores you, and that stalls your progress toward your degree. Being relegated to such a class could perhaps even bar you from taking other, more interesting writing classes until you successfully complete that too-easy course as a prerequisite. Do not let this happen to you. Instead, prepare to showcase all of your writing abilities on test day with the help of personalized ACCUPLACER WritePlacer tutoring. Varsity Tutors can help you get connected with an ACCUPLACER WritePlacer tutor.
ACCUPLACER WritePlacer tutors can provide you with focused instruction geared toward helping you master the writing skills and concepts you most need to improve upon in order to succeed on exam day. Each WritePlacer tutor is familiar with the details of the assessment, as well as the five characteristics of writing that its evaluators particularly stress. They are also talented and enthusiastic teachers, able to help you develop your writing skills through targeted exercises and plenty of feedback. To further customize your experience, Varsity Tutors' educational directors can analyze your current writing skills, concerns, and preferred learning style to help you connect with the personal tutor best suited to working with you. At that point, your tutor can gauge your writing abilities and use this analysis to craft a series of lesson plans that focus on helping you develop the exact skills you most need to bolster before your test. You can have your tutor's full attention during each of your in person or face-to-face online ACCUPLACER WritePlacer tutoring sessions, meaning that you can receive prompt feedback on your work and immediately walk through ways in which you can improve your abilities as soon as you finish an exercise.
Your tutor can also help you learn to bolster your skills not just in writing your work, but also in pre-writing, outlining, and proofreading your work ' all steps that can come together to help you excel on the day of your exam. Figuring out where to start improving your own writing skills is a nearly impossible exercise without the help of someone who can provide helpful and objective criticism of your work. While reading over your own work, it's easy to miss errors or structural issues. A fresh set of eyes is crucial to the editing process. Your ACCUPLACER WritePlacer Tutor can be these eyes, and they will help you ensure that your writing is the best that it can be. Excellent writing instructors can provide just the feedback you need, helping you to identify and refine any weaknesses in your prose before test day. Contact an educational director at Varsity Tutors to learn more about the specific ACCUPLACER WritePlacer tutoring options that are available in your area, or for help getting connected with a personal instructor as soon as possible! Meeting with an ACCUPLACER WritePlacer tutor is the first step on your path to writing excellence!

In our last session, we reviewed test-taking strategies for each portion of the exam. We made some final edits to his last essay and reviewed the vocabulary that had come up over the course of his reading comprehension practice. We then spent the remainder of the time working on extra math problems with an emphasis on arithmetic and speed. I sent his mom a couple of online practice tests for him to complete yesterday to get him in the timed test-taking mode. All in all I believe he is very well prepared for the high school exam.
Today, the student and I focused on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and a few math problems. We reviewed the stem lists that the student has been working on, and then she completed 25 practice vocabulary problems. The student then did three reading comprehension problems, and we ended the session with doing timed math problems.
Today, the student and I worked on preparing him for his essay. After talking about the writing skills that colleges generally expect to see from their students, and some of the ways in which he can demonstrate those skills in his essay, we focused on the aspects of academic writing that he finds most challenging. In particular, we explored differences between conversational and academic English in terms of vocabulary, syntax, and tone. We practiced finding more formal ways to express some of the ideas that he initially wrote in an informal, conversational style, and reviewed some of the grammar and punctuation rules that we had previously examined in the context of the test.
We met and discussed an overall plan for using our time together to prepare the student for success on the basic skills test required for teaching certification. I modeled a strategy of inner dialogue for completing reading comprehension passages and then had him practice with my support and guidance. We also discussed the pros and cons of each of the two basic skills tests that are accepted: the TAP and the ACT.
The student and I worked on several different things in our session today. She has tests coming up in science, social studies, and math, so we spent some time discussing good ways to study for those tests. We talked about writing out the information on note cards to help boil it down into smaller chunks and main ideas. We then worked on the essay she has, which she was having trouble with. I helped her organize her thoughts and pull out quotes from the story to support her ideas. We also looked over a math homework assignment that she had left a few problems blank on, and she understood them once we went over them. Finally, we worked on prep for the state test. We continued working on the short responses we had started working on last time, and I left her an extended response to do over the weekend for homework. The student is doing a great job with everything, and she is a pleasure to work with!
The student studied for her science and Spanish tests. We also spent time on math because her math test is in 2 days.
She has worked extremely hard to prepare for finals, and the end of the tunnel is in sight.!!
