What is your teaching philosophy?
To facilitate the acquisition of lifelong learning skills; and to foster critical thinking skills. My teaching practices should empower students to take ownership of their education and help them realize that they are responsible for their learning outcomes.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know her strengths and weaknesses.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Setting sequencing instruction. Recovery from mistakes. Learning from past errors also provides capacity for continued student learning. And, setting goals.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Praise Students in Ways Big and Small. Recognize work in class, display good work in the classroom and send positive notes home to parents, hold weekly awards in your classroom, organize academic pep rallies to honor the honor roll, and acknowledge students' hard work.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Make connections. Connecting what the student already knows while she reads sharpens her focus and deepens understanding.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Don't procrastinate! Use your time wisely and make sure the work you need to do is done before you go do something with your friends. Don't forget that the main reason you are in college is to get an education and better yourself, so make that your top priority.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Give students a sense of control. While guidance from a teacher is important to keeping students on task and motivated, allowing students to have some choice and control over what happens in the classroom is actually one of the best ways to keep them engaged. For example, allowing students to choose the type of assignment they do or which problems to work on can give them a sense of control that may just motivate them to do more.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Giving out class test and assignments.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Start students from basic topics.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By setting objectives and organizing test intermittently.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By evaluating my teaching methods and adopting the best that suit the needs of students.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Textbooks, note book, pencil, laptop, and illustrative items with respect to the topic in question.
