What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy begins and ends with loving the student and believing in them. Their effort and enthusiasm greatly increase when they realize I genuinely care and support their dreams.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would strive to boost their self-confidence and teach them to ask the right questions. I would also help them better process what they already know.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Before looking at any work, I would want to break the ice by getting acquainted and discussing any common interests. I would also hope to hear all about the student's goals and dreams.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would encourage them by highlighting some of their strengths. I would also look for a link between their current assignment and their life-goals. Then I would show them how the assignment is helping them work toward their goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would first determine how the student is processing the concept. Then I would seek to present the problem in a way that they may better understand.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I don't believe anything beats the power of encouragement. Although it is ok for them to be aware of their weaknesses, I believe a greater emphasis should be placed on their strengths.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would build their confidence by highlighting their strengths in the subject. I would also look for ways to link the subject with their life goals. Then I would help them see how the subject is helping them get closer to their dreams.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask probing questions and have them explain the material in their own words.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Encourage them in their strengths and highlight what they already know.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would listen to them and make note of any insecurities, struggles, or negative thought patterns.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Depending on the issue, I would seek to instill confidence, explain a different approach, or help them restructure how they mentally process.
