Today the student and I took a little time off of pre-algebra to talk about note taking. I gave him a couple tips and an assignment to take diligent notes in his next math classes until we meet again. We also talked about the concepts of exponents, square roots, and ratios.

The student got 100% on her Earth Science test. She is very proud of her achievement and I see confidence growing during our lesson. Today, we worked on the luminosity and temperature of stars. She plotted stars on luminosity vs temperature graph. In addition, she worked on her math homework. She worked on word problems related to similar triangles. She is showing mastery level in solving for the missing side once the figures are correctly drawn.

The student worked on his homework, writing out vocabulary words in sentences and also writing a story. He was very creative and showed that he understood most of the terms by readily making up sentences with them. Special attention was paid to capitalizing and using proper punctuation. We also read for a little bit. He was rushed, but we made a point of stopping on unfamiliar words.

The student and I covered a variety of topics that were covered in recent weeks of class. Specifically, we covered solving algebraic equations for various types, adding and subtracting to both sides/fractions, multiplying and dividing to both sides/distribution properties, etc. He has strong computational skills and comprehension. He also picks up new concepts quickly. I worked with him to try to write out more steps, double-checking answers, and using the calculator in most circumstances (as they are allowed to). He did follow these suggestions, and I will keep reinforcing this in future sessions.

Since the student has started Algebra 2, I made today's goal to go back to Algebra 1 to see what he didn't feel comfortable with. Now as he learns new topics in Algebra 2, we will go over them to test his competency and show him how algebra 1 and 2 tie together.
